Anno Hideaki is born on May 22, in Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan.
At age 14, watched broadcast of Space Battleship Yamato anime TV series. The program would leave its mark on him.
Acquired his first 8mm movie camera, at age 17. First began considering filming Kamen Rider or Ultraman at this time.
Late 1970's While still in high school, Anno makes his first 8mm film, "Nakamu-Rider", a parody piece covering all of his personal favorite bits, starring a young man named Nakamura, the president of Anno's class in high school (Awaiting Confirmation). Also began creating anime on paper as a member of "Group SHADO", a fan group dedicated to producing its own features (Subject to Verification).
Entered the Filmmaking Department of the Osaka College of Art, at the age of 18 (Subject to Verification), where he met Akai Takami, Yamaga Hiroyuki and others, according to the Complete Royal Space Force--Wings of Honneamise Production Story. That Winter, he creates an Ultraman parody in the guise of an assignment to create a commercial for class, on 8mm film. When the hero, played by Yamaga, transforms into Ultraman, Anno plays the role without a mask. Total budget: 8000Yen (about US$25 at the time).

Early 1980's In his sophomore year, or thereabouts, Anno produces "Ultraman Deluxe," a three-minute 8mm film, so Yamaga can get his degree. He receives a fifth-place award at the college film festival. Later, he provides mechanical designs and primary animation work for the opening animation, directed by Yamaga, for Daicon 3, the 20th Annual Japan SF Convention, and the third held in Osaka, hence the name.
At age 22, provides mechanical designs, special effects, and narration for "Aikoku Sentai Dainippon (Patriot Taskforce Great Japan)", the first Daicon Film feature, in August. He also wears the monster costume. Then he goes to Tokyo with Yamaga, and helps out on key animation and retouch work on the pilot episode of the animated TV series "Macross: Super Dimension Fortress".
Daicon Film releases its second feature, "The Return of Ultraman", an extended version of Anno's "Ultraman Deluxe", in March. At age 23, Anno serves as director, title character, special effects man, and designer. He also works on key animation for Macross episode 24, "Good-Bye Girl", and episode 27, "Love Drifts Away", in addition to the Daicon 4 opening animation. His work on Macross has enabled him to hone his skills dramatically since Daicon 3, and it shows.
At age 24, Anno works on key animation for two major theatrical animated films: "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" and "Macross: Love--Do You Remember", handling key segments of both. He follows this up with key animation work on the "Birth" OVA, episode 156 of the Urusei Yatsura TV series, and Cream Lemon Part 4, Pop Chaser. Gainax is founded in December.
At age 25, Anno works on the Royal Space Force Pilot Film, production on which began in December of 1984, continuing to work on the film itself later on. He also worked on the key animation for the original "Megazone 23", designed and executed the miniature work for the last Daicon Film feature, "Revenge of Yamata Orochi, The Eight-Headed Snake", and compiled the material for the "Complete Thunderbirds" video digest (Subject to Verification).
At age 27, Anno provides special effects work for just about everything except for the characters in The Royal Space Force--Wings of Honneamise, which premieres this year. He also works on key animation for the "Metal Skin Panic Madox-01" OVA, and directs a three-minute promotional film for the Nintendo FamiCom game Valis, Illusion Warrior, with character designs by Nishijima Katsuhiko.
At age 28, works on mechanical designs for the movie "Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Armageddon". The first volume of the "Top o Nerae!" OVA series, Anno's professional directorial debut, is released as well.
Volume 2 of "Top o Nerae!" comes out in January, followed by Volume 3 in July.

Nadia ends in April. Anno appears in the "Nadia Variety Video", and supervises the "Nadia Music Videos, Vols. 1 and 2". The Nadia movie comes out this year, but Anno does not participate. He does work on key animation for the promotional film for a toy called "Armored Giant ZNIGHT", as well as directing a "parody" commercial for anime shops, with character designs by Kikuchi Michitaka, and the bonus material for the Nadia Laserdisc set.
At age 32, works on the key animation for the pilot episode of the OVA version of Giant Robo (Subject to Verification). Also writes and directs the CD drama version of "The Spirit of Wonder--China's Lament" (Subject to Verification), provides key animation for the OVA "Teito Monogatari--Bosatsu Hen (Tale of the Imperial Capital--The Chapter of the Bodhisattva)", and began preparatory work on "Aoki Uru" (Subject to Verification).
At age 33, begins planning work on "Evangelion" (Subject to Verification), as well as assisting on key animation for two scenes of the Sailor Moon R movie, and editing and publishing the "Friends of Char's Armageddon" dojinshi.
