Zastavna district


Zastavna district is situated to the north from Chernivtsi, between Prut River and Dnister River. The district's territory is 618 square kilometers, which is 7.6 % of the territory of the region. The district borders on Khotyn district and Novoselytsa district on the East, on Kytsman district on the West, on Ivano-Frankivsk region on the Northwest and on Ternopil region on the North, where Dnister River is a natural border's boundary.

The district center is the town of Zastavna. Its name is connected with the history of Galitsko-Volinska state. "Zastavna" is a town "za stavami" ("behind the ponds") on the trade road going from the ancient town of Vasiliv to Chernivtsi at the upper part of Sovitsa River. The agro-industrial complex is the base of district's economy.

For many years a unique colony of gray heron settles down on the slopes near the village of Babin, which lead to Dnister River. The colony consists of 99 nests, which are situated on 26 oaks at a height of 12-18 meters.

Balamutivska cave is situated on the right bank of Dnister River, near the village of Balamutivka. It is the most distinguished cave in Bukovina, which is the geological monument of National significance. Rock paintings of primitive of mesolite epoch (about 2 thousand years ago) were discovered in the cave. The paintings reflect the beliefs of people of the Stone Age.

There is a karst cave named Ducha. It is a typical emptiness of the waterside of Dnister River. The length of the explored part of the cave is 114 meters. Interesting gypsum formations were discovered on the cave's walls. The cave was explored by speleologists and mapped.

The village of Vasiliv is one of the former settlements of Galitska Rus. It is an annalistic village on the bank of Dnister River. Accordingly to archaeological research there was a village on the territory of the current Vasiliv village in the 2nd century. A trade road along Dnister River passed through this village. A hill is remains as historical evidence. There was Vasilivski cathedral on top of the hill in 1230. Its height was 35 meters. The cathedral was there for 500 years and ceased existence in the second half of 17th century. The remains of the cathedral have great historical value, because it was one of the most distinguished temples known on Ukrainian land. Wide research of archeological monuments of ancient Vasiliv is reflected in the displays of Chernivtsi museum of local lore.

The village of Vaslovivtsi is the homeland of the first metropolitan of Bukovina Evgen Gakman (1793-1873). Thanks to metropolitan Gakman, a self-dependent Bukovinian canonical Orthodox branch existed during 70 years. A cathedral and metropolitan's residency in Chernivtsi were built with his assistance. The village is also made famous by the Berda Mountain, which is the highest point not only of Khotin Height, but of the entire Eastern European Plain as well. The name of the mountain comes from the name of a detail of a loom ("berda"), as the place resembles one in appearance.

The village of Vikno is famous by its park, which is a monument of garden and park art. The park was founded in 1860. Its area is 2.7 hectares. There are 28 types of trees in the park. Among them are such rare types as ginkgo and plane tree. There are three oaks 180-250 years old and a chestnut alley. This park has scientific, cultural and aesthetic significance.

There is a military cemetery on one of the hills near Zveniachin village. 11,830 soldiers and officers of Austro-Hungarian, German and Russian armies, who died in battles of 1914-1918, are buried there. The cemetery was founded during World War I.

There is a natural geological monument, a unique three-storied cave in Dovgij Yar tract, not far from Pogorilivka village. The cave is a rare case of a vivid example of nine out of eleven stages of karst process development. The length of the explored part is 377 meters. This unique natural monument is a labyrinth of rare beauty.

The village of Khreshatik is famous by a holy spring that has existed for a long time. Radiance appears above the spring on the night of Ivan Bogoslov holiday. Cases of healing of different illnesses that are connected with the healing water from the holy spring are known. There is a cross, erected near the spring, as well as a chapel and a temple in honor of St. Ivan Bogoslov. The temple was built in the 1860s, and it is still in existence.

Fishing in Zastavna district is possible on the Dnister River. Hunting takes place on hunting grounds that are 43 hectares in area. There are numerous roe deer, wild bore, duck, fox, and hare.
