Stand-off Darren Lockyer has agreed to play for the New Zealand 'All Golds' in the centenary international against the Northern Union on 21 October.

The Brisbane and Australia captain has agreed to fill the breach caused by the retirement of Andrew Johns.

Johns had been earmarked to emulate the great Dally Messenger in the commemorative match at Warrington.

"It's a special privilege to be involved," said Lockyer, who was voted the best player in the world in 2006.

The match will act as a curtain raiser to the autumn Test series between Great Britain and New Zealand.

Lockyer is proud to be playing a key role in an historic match.

"It's the first and probably only time I'll be asked to do anything like this," he said.

"Dally Messenger was the man at the forefront of starting rugby league in not just Australia but also New Zealand."

Lockyer's Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett will be in charge of the match, which marks the 100th anniversary of the All Golds' trailblazing tour to the United Kingdom in 1907.

"This is a great honour and it's unique in the game," he said.
