Straw-necked Ibis

Named for the stiff, straw-like lower neck feathers of the adults, this Ibis species grows up to 70cm in length.

Small aquatic animals make up most of their diet, however grasshopper plagues will also attract large numbers of these birds.

Sometimes called the Dryweather Bird, they breed in colonies at any time of the year, depending on flooding. Up to five eggs are laid on a nest platform in reeds or a bush. The nest building, mating and incubating involve a great deal of ceremony.
