Luxembourg (dpa) - Gaston Thorn, Luxembourg's former prime minister and past president of the European Commission has died at the age of 78, a government official said Sunday.
Thorn served as foreign minister for Luxembourg (1969 to 1974), premier for five years to 1979 and as president of the United Nations General Assembly (1975-1976).
In 1981 he took office as chair of the Commission of the European Economic Community, today's 27-nation European Union. Thorn held this post until 1985 when he entered business, including media in Luxembourg.
