2007 Oceania World Championship Qualification - Match Three

Australia 'Black-out' the All Blacks

June 08, 2007
A 'black-out' in Dural and surrounding areas, delayed the start of match three of the Oceania World Championship Qualification game by one hour to 9 pm, played between Australia vs New Zealand Handball Federation (NZHF).

There was no shortage of power and intensity from Australia as they defended aggressively against NZHF. The Australian defence, marshalled by Captain, Raelene Boulton, constantly pressed and covered the NZHF attacking players, which reduced the options for NZHF players forcing them to make many mistakes, which resulted in turnovers to Australia's advantage.

After 11 minutes of play, Australia raced away to a 6 - 0 lead, with their goals coming from a combination of fast breaks, set plays and a penalty.

Lilly Maher, centre back for Australia, not only created many goals through set plays and her blistering pace, also managed to score six goals in the process. Left wing player Aminta Thomas, also played a disciplined game, being in the right position, be it for a fast break or to take advantage of gaps created by the backs.

At half time the score was 17 - 4 to Australia, and the intensity in the second half subsided. A highlight of the second half was a 'Pirouette Spin' penalty goal by Australian right winger, Solveig Petersen, who drew cheering from the enthusiastic crowd.

For NZHF, left back Nicole Odermatt, played valiantly all game and was the target of constant attention in attack by the Australian defence.
