Culture, Difference and the Arts

The need for Australia to confront issues of culture and difference has never been greater. As we enter a new century we face an increasingly complex world constituted by local and global networks. Our challenge is to develop new ways of thinking about social and cultural relations and about the role of the arts in a multicultural society.

Culture, Difference and the Arts brings together a set of essays by leading cultural critics, arts practitioners and administrators who take up this challenge.

First published in 1994, the collection remains startlingly relevant.

The Australia Council would like to thank the editors for their generous permission to publish this book online.
