The French rail network totals 32,888 kilometres of line (out of which 31,986 are in service and 28,918 kilometres are currently in use). Details of the whole rail network can be found below.

THE FRENCH RAIL NETWORK

29,203 kilometres of line that are open for commercial use

  • High speed lines (HSL): 1550 km
  • Double track or wider: 16,104 km
  • Electrified lines: 14,778 km
    • At 1500 Volts DC: 5885 km
    • At 25,000 Volts AC: 8771 km
    • By third rail and others: 122 km

 

819 km of lines for freight services



RAILWAY TRACK

 

52,990 km of main line track in use of which:

  • Main lines points and crossovers : 26,081 km.

 


SIGNALLING AND SAFETY EQUIPMENT (MAIN LINES AND CONNECTIONS)

 

1447 km of track equipped with TVM cab signalling

15,191 km of track equipped with automatic blocks, of which:

  • BAL (luminous automatic block) : 10,476 km
  • BAPR (automatic block with limited permissiveness): 4480km
  • BAVB (automatic block for single lines) : 235 km

5420 km of track equipped with manual block

2420 km of track consisting of single-line tracks equipped with a CAPI (computer assisted train dispatch) system

2273 signal boxes, of which 1173 are electronic

14,141 km of line equipped with Train To Surface Radio (RST).


LEVEL CROSSINGS (LC)

 

19,050 LCs, of which:

  • 17,826 are public, including:
    • 1 865 LC that are guarded
    • 15 062 LC that are not guarded
    • 899 LC that are for pedestrians
  • 1 232 LC are private (conceded to a third party)

 

MAJOR STRUCTURES

 

  • 1720 tunnels (for a total length of 631 km)
  • 30,959 bridges (for a total length of 476 km)
  • 19,863 major retaining walls and ripraps
  • 1204 pedestrian fly-overs
