(2/26/98) - The big Grammy winners last night were Shawn Colvin, who in a bit of a surprise swept the Song Of The Year and Record Of The Year categories, and Bob Dylan, who claimed trophies for Album Of The Year, Best Male Rock Performance and Best Folk Album. Other multiple-award winners were Puff Daddy, R. Kelly, the Wallflowers, Erykah Badu and Sarah McLachlan.

However, the most memorable highlights of the Grammy telecast weren't the actual award presentations. Live performances from Hanson (who, despite three nominations, sadly went home empty-handed last night), Erykah Badu with Wyclef Jean, a Paula Cole/ Shawn Colvin/ Sarah McLachlan trio, Fleetwood Mac (doing a "Rhiannon"/ "Go Your Own Way"/ "Don't Stop" medley that received a standing ovation), and Bob Dylan (which also brought the audience members to their feet) were instead the biggest highlights. But perhaps most entertaining was the impromptu tirade from the Wu-Tang Clan's Ol' Dirty Bastard, who intercepted Shawn Colvin just as she was approaching the podium to accept her Song Of The Year statuette. Mr. Bastard went off on a Puffy-dissing jag about Wu-Tang supremacy that had Grammy security hovering warily in the background, unsure of how to stop the insanity. Once the Bastard was finally escorted offstage, a flabbergasted Colvin exclaimed laughingly into the mic, "I'm really confused now!" Ceremony host Kelsey Grammer thanked "the gentleman from the Wu-Tang Clan for clearing that up."
