SCOTLAND'S LARGEST SUN ENERGY SYSTEM INSTALLED IN WESTERN ISLES 2 November 2004

The largest Photovoltaic installation in Scotland has been installed at Sir E. Scott School in the Western Isles.

Photovoltaic systems generate electricity from the sun. A 21 kWp photovoltaic system with 120 Solar panels and 6 inverters has been installed in the south facing roof of the new extension at the school by the Comhairle.

The project will act as a demonstration project to stimulate demand for greater take-up of photovoltaic technology and to realise the potential that the Western Isles has for the sustainable exploitation of renewable energy.

Cllr Archie Campbell, Chairman of the Comhairle’s Alternative Energy Group, said: “This is innovative work in the field of renewable energy and continues the Comhairle’s drive to use the natural resources of the Western Isles in a way which benefits local communities and increases energy efficiency. This is the largest such installation in Scotland and will demonstrate the potential of using energy from the sun for generating electricity in a sustainable way even at a northern latitude.”

Funding for the £315k project came from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, Scottish Community and Householder Renewables Initiative, European Regional Development Fund, Highlands and Islands Special Transitional Programme and the Department of Trade and Industry. The installation was carried out by Element Engineering.

Other renewable energy technologies are still to be incorporated in Sir E. Scott School/Harris Sports Centre including a 30kWe combined heat and power unit and a 30 square metre Solar Water Heating system.
