New political crisis looms in Guinea Bissau

Bissau, Guinea Bissau 03/16 - Allies of President Nino Vieira have dismissed as "null and void" the signing, by different Guinea Bissau parties, of a national political stability pact aimed at forming a coalition government.

The allies, in a statement to the media Thursday, said they were going to seek the intervention of the country`s regional court to annul the pact.

In the same vein, the intended merger announced last week, of the ruling African Party for the Independence of Guinea Bissau and Cape Verde (PAIGC) and the opposition, has been postponed indefinitely.

The PAIGC has tabled a vote of no confidence motion against the government of prime minister Aristides Gomes, which is also draws its support from the opposition Social Renovation Party (PRS) and the Social Democratic United Party (PUSD).

"We are calling for an immediate debate at the national assembly on the political situation in the country," Joaquim Batista Correia, PRS spokesman, told the media Thursday.
