CITY OF DANVILLE, ILLINOIS

TEMPLE PLAZA

The original Temple building was constructed in 1900 and 1901 and when constructed was the tallest office building in Danville. The building was damaged by fire on October 11, 1987.  After years of decay, City officials deemed it an eyesore and it was demolished in the summer of 2001. City officials decided to "take a landmark and keep it a landmark". The ornate Temple Arch, the  only remnant of the old Temple building, was repaired to serve as a gateway.  While observers may recognize former house speaker Joseph "Uncle Joe" Cannon, humanitarian Laura Lee, and astronaut Joe Tanner, most of the faces are regular people. The new Temple Plaza will be used for farmer's markets, outdoor concerts, and other events.
