Darwin Day Celebrations at the Centers for Inquiry

Charles Darwin was born on February 12, 1809. The theory of evolution, which he propounded, revolutionized the world of science and impacted society at large. As we approach his birthday in February, the Centers for Inquiry will be celebrating the contributions of Darwin and all the science teachers who labor in the schools to teach evolution and ward off continuing attacks from Creationists and Intelligent Design advocates.

The Center for Inquiry International, Amherst, NY will be hosting a Darwin Day Fish Fry on Tuesday, February 12 from 4 to 8 p.m. with speakers on Darwin's impact on his own times and on teaching evolution in a public school; a visiting ape, a marathon reading of Origin of Species, light refreshments (fish and chips), library displays, raffles and plenty of Darwin fish pins and decals for sale. Admission is $5.00 at the door and is free to Friends of the Center.

The Center for Inquiry-West, Los Angeles, CA will be hosting a Darwin Day Birthday Bash on Saturday, February 16th at 8:00 p.m. The featured speaker will be Austin Dacey, Ph.D. The topic of Dr. Dacey's speech will be "Darwinism in the 21st Century: Notes from the Intellectual Battlefield." Refreshments, including a birthday cake for Darwin, will be served. Admission and parking are free.

The Center for Inquiry-MetroNY will be hosting an Evolutionary Fashion Show. Participants will be given a card with a character or creature from an evolutionary era and they have to improvise or act out the character. It's all great fun for this improv game to be held at the Center on Feb. 10 and again on Feb. 27 at the NJHN.

Check with the individual Centers for more details. Also please visit www.darwinday.org for information about Darwin and other events around the country. The Darwin Day site is a project hosted by Amanda Chesworth.
