Joshua Slocum was a working seaman whose adventures included building an ocean-going junk-rigged canoe in South America to transport his family home (see The Voyage of the Liberdade), and restoring a decrepit oystering boat and then sailing alone around the world, the first man to do so. His story of that voyage, Sailing Alone Around the World, has inspired countless ocean cruisers, harbor daysailors, and landlubbers. Read it for the sailing, the picture of a world only recently passed, or for the crusty bluenose humor.
