1. The Prime Minister of the Bahamas has stated that there is no need for donations of food, medical supplies and clothing. There are sufficient supplies of such items to meet the needs of the affected islands. Outstanding needs concentrate on potable water, water testing and chlorine tablets and vector control.

2. Assessments have been carried out by the authorities, the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA), PAHO and the Office of US Foreign Disaster Assistance/USAID. PAHO set up a supply management system (SUMA) at the emergency operations centre in the Grand Bahama.

3. One casualty has been confirmed. Shelters housing 1,500 people since 13 September have now been closed.

4. Damage to housing: 25 per cent in the island of Eleuthera, 50 per cent in the island of Abaco. The Bahamas Electricity Corporation (BEC) reports that electricity supply should be fully restored in Nassau by the end of this week. Volunteer relief crews organized by the Caribbean Electricity Corporation (CARILEC) will assist in repair work in all areas affected.

5. Assessment of damage is still on-going with regard to homes, infrastructure and, crops.

6. PAHO emphasizes the following immediate concerns: the water supply system, the maintenance of the cold chain for the immunization of the population, vector control, epidemiological surveillance. For medical requirements, donors should contact directly the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Emergency Preparedness and Disaster Relief Coordination Programme , phone number: 1-202-974-35.20/ Fax number: 1-202-775-45.78.

7. According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the 41 shelters operated by the Bahamas Red Cross have already been closed as families returned to their homes.

8. OCHA has not been requested by the Government of the Bahamas to launch an appeal for international assistance.
