ALEXANDRIA, Va. – A commuter rail system linking Northern Virginia opened in 1992, offering motorists a break from crowded interstates.

A line connecting Manassas, Va., and Washington opened on June 22, 1992. A second line – from Fredericksburg, Va., to Washington – opened July 20, 1992.

Virginia Railway Express (VRE) operates trains along Norfolk Southern tracks between Manassas to Alexandria and on CSX tracks between Fredericksburg and Alexandria. Tracks between Alexandria and Washington and owned by CSX and Amtrak. A little more than 81 miles makes up the entire VRE system.

Amtrak crews operate VRE trains.
