::: Alappuzha (Alleppey) - Venice of the East

Washed by the silvery waves of the Arabian Sea, Alappuzha or Alleppey, the Venice of the East as described by Lord Curzon welcomes you to the backwaters of Kerala. Located on a thin strip of land, sandwiched between the Arabian Sea and the Punnamada backwaters, the large network of canals provide Alleppey its lifeline. The palm fringed canals and shores bustling with glimpses from the day to day life in the country side, the mirror still lagoons, picture book lakesides and its long sandy beach has blessed Alappuzha, the water locked district, to become one of the best Backwater tourism destinations in God's Own Country. This district is also notable for its numerous pilgrimage centres that draw vast crowds on the festival days and also boasts of having some of the best ayurvedic rejuvenation centres in Kerala. This Venice of the East is also famous for its coir and carpet industries in addition to featuring many other attractions of tourist importance.

Krishnapuram Palace, Kayamkulam - Soaked in history and situated 47 kms from Alappuzha on the way to Kollam, this 18th century Krishnapuram Palace built during the reign of the Travancore monarch, Marthanda Varma, is a double storied structure which displays typical characteristics of Kerala architecture-gabled roofs, dormar windows, narrow corridors. It houses one of the largest mural paintings in Kerala called the Gajendra Moksham. It measures14 feet by 11 feet and is at the western end of the ground floor. Inside is also a museum of antique sculptures, paintings and bronzes.
Krishnapuram Palace - Alappuzha, Kerala
Alappuzha Beach, Alappuzha - Alappuzha beach is one of the most popular spots in the district of Alappuzha. Its beautiful garden on the shore gives an exclusive sight. Imposing building of colonial past overlook the shore. The pier, which extends into the sea is more than 140 years old and is a rare sight.
Kuttanad Paddy Field - Alappuzha, Kerala
Kuttanad Region, Kuttanad - Kuttanad, is called the "Rice bowl of Kerala" because of its wealth of paddy crops. With 500 square kilometres of the region below sea level, this perhaps the only region in the world where farming is done 1.5 to 2 ms below sea level. Kuttanad stretches for 75 km sandwiched between the sea & the hills. The bewildering labyrinth of shimmering waterways composed of lakes, canals, rivers & rivulets, is lined with dense tropical greenery, and preserves rural Kerala life styles that are completely hidden from the road.
Mullakkal Rajeswari Temple, Alappuzha - This temple is located in the heart of the city. The temple is dedicated to the goddess Rajarajeswari. The nine day 'Navarathri' festival is celebrated with all the fervour and traditional grandeur and the last two days, ie the Mahanavami and the Vijayadasami being the most important culminating in cultural pageantry and is of special significance for the people of Alappuzha. Another important festival of the temple is 'Thaipooyakavadi'.
Pathiramanal (An Island) , Vembanad Lake - According to mythology a young brahmin dived into the Vembanad lake to perform his evening ablutions and the water made way for land to rise from below, thus creating the enchanting island of Pathiramanal bordering Kottayam and Alappuzha. This little Island on the backwaters is a favourite haunt of hundreds of rare migratory birds from different parts of the world. The Island lies between Thaneermukkom and Kummarakom, and is accessible only by boat. Pathiramanal, meaning "Sands of the Night", is an ideal place to take a break.

Ambalapuzha Temple, Ambalapuzha - The Sri Krishna Temple at Ambalapuzha, 14 kms from Alappuzha, is among Kerala's more famous ones boasting of the typical temple architectural style of the state. It is equally famed for its palpayasam - a sweet milk porridge offered to the diety. The temple's main festival occurs in March/April. The ‘Ottamthullal', a satiric art form based on social themes, the brain child of the poet Kunchan Nambiar in the 16th century, was performed for the first time in the premises of this temple.
Mannarasala - Alappuzha, Kerala

Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple, Mannarasala - 32 kms south of Alappuzha situated near Harippad, is the ancient temple of Sree Nagaraja, the King of Serpents. In this temple, the rites are presided over by a priestess. The ancient shrine is an internationally renowned pilgrim centre and people from all over the country assemble here during the two day annual festival. Women seeking fertility are believed to be blessed with children and a special turmeric paste available at the shrine is credited with powers to cure even leprosy. The temple is reputed for having 30,000 images of snake-gods.

Punnapra, Alappuzha- A short distance from Alappuzha is Punnapra, a village which has gone down in history as the scene of a bitter and heroic fighting between the communists and Travancore State Police during the Punnapra Vayalar Communist uprising of 1946. A memorial to the martyrs stands testimony to the event, which the state Government declared as a pat of the freedom struggle. The Punnapra-Vayalar Riot tombs is situated at Kaithavana, 3Km away from the Alappuzha town.
Mararikulam , Alappuzha - Situated on the coast south of about 12 Kms from Alappuzha, it houses the pure and soft Mararikulam Beach, welcoming you into its warm embrace with its endless miles of superb sand backed by swaying palms. Pool, tennis, water sports and Ayurvedic treatments are the leisure time activities one can avail of. Sip a tropical fruit and set out on a leisure walk towards the local fishermen's village and experience a pleasure beyond description as you observe the traditional ways of the fisher folk. Life here is much the same as it used to be in the ancient times.
Mararikulam - Alappuzha, Kerala
Karumadi, Ambalapuzha - Situated in Ambalapuzha, 14 kms from Alappuzha, Karumadi is famous for its Karumadi Kuttan (literally translated it means the "Boy from Karumadi"), a black granite figure of the Buddha said to belong to the 9th or 10th century. The name is derived from the name of the area in which this statue is located - Karumadi. The statue is unique since it is half broken. Legend has it that an elephant charged towards this statue and broke right half of the statue. It was declared as protected monument in 1965.

Q S T and R Block Kayal, Kuttanad - Situated in Kuttanad popularly known as the "Rice bowl of Kerala", QST & R Block Kayals (backwaters) remind the visitor of the famous dikes of Holland. A striking example of the indigenous agricultural engineering know-how,here cultivation and habitation are made possible at four to ten feet below the sea level. For this purpose extensive land has been reclaimed from the backwaters and is protected by dikes built around it. A leisurely cruise along the canals here is a memorable experience.
Backwater Cruise, Alappuzha - Feel ecstatic at the sight of wobbling ducks on the densely vegetated banks that are incidentally on the same level as the backwaters. This unique topographical aspect in Alappuzha gives you an opportunity to observe closely the impulsive activities of birds, children and the day-to-day village activities on the water banks.
