OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Oklahoma City state Senator Andrew Rice says he'll run for the U.S. Senate next year. The 34-year-old Democrat plans a formal public announcement after Labor Day, but Thursday confirmed his plans to challenge incumbent Senator Jim Inhofe, who is running for re-election in 2008.

Rice says he discussed the idea with his wife, Apple, and his parents before making the decision.

He says it's a good opportunity to offer a fresh choice.

During his first year in the Oklahoma Senate, Rice says he's been able to work on issues with senators from both political parties and thinks he can do this in the U.S. Senate, too.

Rice has filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission.
