San Antonio-based H-E-B ranked No. 11 on Forbes' 2006 list of America's Largest Private Companies, with $12.4 billion in annual revenue, the magazine said Wednesday. Last year, Forbes also ranked the grocery chain 11th, based on $11 billion in annual sales for 2004.
H-E-B's revenue increased 7.8 percent from 2004 to 2005, Forbes said.
A spokeswoman for H-E-B couldn't be reached for comment.
Of the 394 companies on the list, locally based Zachry Construction Corp. ranked No. 327, with an estimated $1.18 billion in revenue. This was the first time the construction and industrial maintenance service company made the list.
Forbes said Zachry's revenue increased 21.6 percent from 2004 to 2005. The company has about 12,000 employees.
Topping the Forbes list this year was Kansas-based Koch Industries.
Companies on the list have at least $1 billion in annual revenue. They have too few shareholders to be required to file financial statements with the Securities and Exchange Commission or shares whose ownership is restricted to a group, such as family or workers, according to Forbes.
Among grocers, Florida-based Publix Super Markets outranked H-E-B at No. 4 with $20.75 billion in revenue, as did the Michigan-based Meijer supermarket chain, with an estimated $13.2 billion in revenue.
Locally, H-E-B has about 52 stores and almost a 63 percent market share, trumping Wal-Mart's 17 stores and 25 percent market share.
H-E-B has about 300 stores in Texas and northern Mexico and an estimated 60,000 employees.
