Clarendon , parish (1991 pop. 211,447), Middlesex co., Jamaica; May Pen; 17°44'N 77°09'W-18°12'N 77°29'W. Bounded on N by St. Ann, W by Manchester, E by St. Catherine parishes, S by the Caribbean Sea. RR through May Pen to Chapelton facilitates connection with Frankfield area. Rio Minho Valley area is famous for production of cedar, mahoe, mahogany and giant cotton trees. Mocho Mts. rise 2,000 ft/610 m, while farther N Bull Head Mt. rises 3,600 ft/1,097 m. The Clarendon Works and Alcoa Minerals, Inc. est. 1963 at Woodside because of the extensive bauxite and copper deposits. Famous Milk River Spa noted for its high therapeutic value is at Round Hill near Vere. Airstrip at Vernamfield was 1st Jamaican car-racing track. Sugar works at Kellits. Denbigh is famous for annual Natl. Agr. Show. Historic ruins at the Rock R. Dam site. Portland Point Lighthouse, a landmark on the summit of Portland Ridge at 17°44'N 77°10'W. Agr. (cotton, indigo, sugar, bananas, coffee, cocoa, tobacco); dairy farming; fish farming. Significant bauxite exports.
