Noteworthy places in Reagan's life

"I spent four years at station WHO in Des Moines and they were among the most pleasant of my life. At 22 I'd achieved my dream; I was a sports announcer. If I had stopped there, I believe I would have been happy the rest of my life."

Warner Bros. studio, Burbank, Calif., 1937-52

"Nothing I'd ever experienced -- no stage fright before a college show or steeplechase jump or dive from a high platform, nothing I'd been through, had produced the kind of jitters I felt when I stepped only Stage Eight at Warner Bros. that morning. ... As soon as I heard the director's words, I forgot all about the camera and the lights and the crew and concentrated on delivering my lines in a way that I hoped would make (high school drama teacher) B.J. Frazer proud."

Hal Roach film studio, Culver City, Calif. Reagan did his service during World War II making air force training films, 1942-45

"My first assignment was to recruit technicians and artists from the movie business for the new unit. ... Pretty soon, even though I was wearing the bars of a second lieutenant, I was offering majors' insignias to half-million-dollar-a-year movie directors. ... Our combat camera crews went to every war zone in the world and our training films were used throughout the army air corps."

Little Brown Church, San Fernando Valley. Reagan and Nancy Davis married there March 4, 1952.

"If the Hollywood press had gotten wind of our plans, they would have stormed the church, so, apologizing to Nancy, I suggested we have a quiet, secret wedding. She agreed and we were married in a touching ceremony in the Little Brown Church in the Valley."

Sacramento, Calif., where Reagan was governor, 1967-75

"For years, I'd been giving speeches about the problems in government. Now ... I'd been given a chance to do something about them. As cumbersome as they were, I was at the controls. It was exciting. Suddenly, instead of just trying to rouse people to act, the problems were mine to deal with and it was a lot more fun than just talking about them."

The White House, 1981-1989

"For so long, I had shared the reverence most Americans have for that historic building; back when I was a kid in Dixon, I'd imagined what the private part of the White House must be like; but I had never imagined myself actually living there. Now, we had gone in the front door, gotten on an elevator, and we were here to stay -- at least for four years. If I could do this, I thought, then truly any child in America had an opportunity to do it."

Rancho del Cielo, the Reagans' ranch near Santa Barbara, Calif., that served as the Western White House. Purchased in 1975, sold in 1998

"From the first day we saw it, Rancho del Cielo cast a spell over us. No place before or since has ever given Nancy and me the joy and serenity it does."
