HAS GITTENS WALKED OUT ON TOWN? 21/07/2004
It may come as no surprise to many in the Sydenhams Wessex League to hear rumours that Fareham Town boss Jon Gittens has handed in his resignation and walked away from Cams Alders.
It appears the decision of the club's owners, the Ralls Group, to axe Fareham's reserve string and use the pitch to home Havant & Waterlooville's reserves has tipped the scales for the ex-Southampton defender.
Gittens (pictured) publicly attacked his boards move ten days ago and it is understood he tendered his resignation upon returning from holiday. His last act will be to thank the players at Tuesday night's friendly against Portsmouth Royal Navy.
Although at the time of writing there is no public announcement from Cams Alders or in the local press, several local non-League sources have confirmed the news.
Gittens' record as Town boss had been good. He had the club heading in the right direction despite several public spats with some members of his squad - notably Peter Woods who spent a long spell in the reserves before leaving the club.
However, Fareham have had a hard summer. Having lost leading scorer Jamie Musselwhite to champions Winchester City they also look likely to lose another couple of senior squad members to other Wessex outfits before the season starts.
If true, the loss of their manager so near the start of the season, followed by an exodus of players and the lack of a reserve team looks likely to undo all the good work Gittens had achieved.
