Tributes paid to Nyapati Subbarao

Rajahmundry: Rich tributes were paid to Nyapati Subbarao Pantulu, the great freedom fighter and one of the founders of The Hindu , on his 150th birth anniversary here on Saturday by The Hindu Samajam, which was founded by Subbarao in 1903.

The grandson of Subbarao Pantulu, who also carries the same name and heads the Samajam, conducted the proceedings in the Samajam building near Kumari Talkies. The speakers paid tributes and also recalled the great works by the freedom fighter, journalist and literary personality.

Spreading the word

The meeting recalled the association of Subbarao Pantulu with Bipin Chandra Pal, Tanguturi Prakasam Pantulu, social reformer Kandukuri Veeresalingam, C.Y. Chintamani and Ayyadevara Kaleswararao. The grandson of Mr. Pantulu said that as part of their movement The Hindu Samajam is ready to roar again and take the inspiring life of Nyapati Subbarao Pantulu to the masses. The other speakers, Nyapati Raghava Rao (another grandson of Subbarao Pantulu), historian YS Narasimha Rao, Sanskrit Scholar and Oriental College Prinicipal Viswanath Gopalakrishna and others spoke on the luminary.

Subbarao Pantulu belonged to the first generation of freedom fighters and had led many movements in the history of the country as well as the Congress party.

Key role

During the Vandemataram movement, Nyapati Subbarao Pantulu invited Bipin Chandra Pal to Rajahmundry in 1907. He was instrumental in carving out an identity for Telugus in the erstwhile While playing a key role in politics and on the social front, Nyapati Subbarao took interest in journalism and literature and founded The Hindu along with Kasturiranga Iyengar and three others in 1878 to support the freedom movement. He also founded the English Journal `Indian Progress.' Subbarao Pantulu died on January 15, 1941, and will remain forever in the hearts of the people of Andhra Pradesh.
