Behind the Scenes at the Police Cover Shoot

Seeing as most of the video we post on this site features that dude who writes “The Smoking Section” following around the Kings of Leon, you can bet we were excited when we laid our hands on an actual quality short film on our recent cover shoot with The Police. It was shot by none other than Jordan Copeland, Stewart Copeland’s son, which might explain why the band was comfortable enough to dress up in wacky costumes for the camera.

Unfortunately, I haven’t read that this tour will make it to China (where I live and teach) but my brother was at the Louisville show and said they were great. He said they sounded incredible and seemed to be having a good time playing all the old songs. Sounds like this tour is a bit of a mixed bag…depends on the night, maybe?

Sistermoon | 9/17/2007, 8:31 pm EST

Just saw the police in Germany, all I can say is WOW they are back! The band is tight, and the boys and the audience are Lovin It!

Saw them this week | 7/28/2007, 3:14 pm EST

Outstanding, best show I’ve ever seen, they seem to be getting better as the tour goes on. A reviewer out of Montreal said he’s never heard a crowd so loud in his career. In Toronto it was a sea of dancing, screaming singing fans.

I’ve been to shows where the audience sits and others where they stand… but I’ve never been to one where everyone was dancing. One huge singalong and it was bar none the best show I’ve ever seen. Great, great stuff!

“IM HEARING BAD REVIEWS FOR THE SHOWS I HOPE THEY HAVE IT TOGEATHER WHEN I SEE THEM IN MIAMI JULY 10TH.”

I was there. They didn’t. Major disappointment. They obviously didn’t put any effort into the show. Smacks of being “all about the money.” $30 for parking? $17 for a weak, disgusting drink? $90 for tickets so far from the stage I needed binoculars? Concerts just aren’t what they used to be.

sandy | 7/6/2007, 11:03 am EST

i had the chance to see them back in ‘83 and they were great. but the show i saw in houston blew me away! they had so much energy and the way they changed it up was awesome! you could really see this time around that they really wanted to be there and they enjoyed playing together again. if someone is expecting to see what they saw some 25 yrs ago, they will be greatly disappointed.

Great…
I have been waiting this reunion for so long.
I’m glad to hear Sting’s voice again in this band.

haa haa haa…touche on both the Gordon Sumner reference and the pain in the ass fee. Just looking for an even $2k for my inconvenience. $1k from you Gordo and $1k from Andy for long-donging me. Stewart is exempt. He actually showed up and played his ass off.
Check in the mail?

Gordon Sumner | 6/26/2007, 3:47 pm EST

Hey Mark Evertz: only $22 for “pain in the ass fee”?? Hmmmm…sounds to me like you like it in the ass.

Mark Evertz | 6/26/2007, 2:11 pm EST

Brian L & Tiger….I feel ya. Seems like they didn’t improve much from the Seattle show I reflected on below. On a more positive note from all this negative you’ll get from people that just think Sting is awesome and The Police can do no wrong….at least you’re being honest and are giving blog visitors a chance to go into this concert with lowered expectations that might be met or exceeded.

The opposite was true for me…and it sounds the same for you, too. Hey..Police apologists…you should thank these guys.

Brian L | 6/25/2007, 1:29 pm EST

Drove 4 hours to see The Police in Dodger stadium as they are one of my favorite bands of all time, and all I have to say is it was a major disappointment! Sting and Andy were lifeless and they screwed around with the arrangements so much that I got really frustrated. “Don’t Stand So Close To Me” was completely ruined by the new arrangement and “Next to You” sounded like a lounge act song since they played this high-energy tune at half speed. Luckily, the Foo Fighters brought their “A” game and upstaged The Police. With Dave Grohl jumping off the stage and running all the way to third base to jam - that is showmanship! A true rock star. Perhaps Andy and Sting need to take some lessons from the Foo Fighters on how to entertain an audience. There are no excuses when bands like Rush, Genesis, and The Who still bring it live and they are just as old as The Police. I will now put in a DVD of a former Police concert and remember when these guys used to bring it…

Tiger | 6/25/2007, 2:41 am EST

I was at the show at Dodger Stadium- on Sat…All I have to say is thank God the Foo Fighters played well. The Police were stale, and totally lifeless. The lead guitar play reminded me of the sounds during that first year my 12 year old got her 1st guitar. They were out of sync, people started to leave early-> In their defense, Dodger Stadium has terrible accoustics, but the FF’s sounded just fine. Boring show, Very disappointed->

Craig | 6/25/2007, 12:49 am EST

Los Angeles Dodger Stadium Show. Seeing the Police play Dodger stadium on a beautiful summer Saturday night in Los Angeles with the Foo Fighters opening……..it just doesn’t get any better than that. The Foo Fighters gave a high energy performance and showed that they were up to the task of playing a large stadium show. As for the Police, I can’t say the energy equaled the stadium shows that I saw on the Synchronicity tour, but I felt that they sounded amazing for a band coming off of a 20 plus year hiatus. I read many of the negative comments from previous shows re some of the new arrangements and lack of energy and I just don’t get it. I liked most of the arrangements and thought that they breathed new life into some very well-worn classic rock staples that have graced the airwaves thousands of times. Stewart Copeland was, and still is, one of the most unique and accomplished drummers in rock history. Great show and well worth the money. I am considering traveling to catch at least one more show before the fold it in.

Robert Alan | 6/24/2007, 1:22 pm EST

Sting’s presence is his sense of humility knowing, although he is great as a solo, he can never rise as high in grandure without the Police.

ann | 6/23/2007, 3:52 am EST

Saw them in Oakland and Vegas, they were awesome, trying to convince my husband to travel one more time this summer to catch just one more show. They are amazing, yes different, but nonetheless amazing. I don’t understand the negative comments.

Mark Evertz | 6/22/2007, 1:52 pm EST

Hey Peter,
Pretty simply, I was expecting them to interact with the crowd, act enthusiastic and not Jazzify/Stingify the music.

I didn’t feel like I was asking too much, but just like I noted in my previous post, I wanted at least the appearance of them actually wanting to be on stage. It was just a really flat show…in my opinion. And not to compare dicks, but I’ve been to well over 500 shows in my lifetime and I know a flat show when I see one. The one in Seattle was that. And my opinion didn’t even factor in the typically lazy comparison to a studio album. That’s just asking too much of a band and it doesn’t give them freedom to broaden the story of the band and its music live.

I love that people love The Police…I, too, love The Police and, yes, that darn Sting is still crazy handsome, shirt on or off, at 50 or whatever he is. But the Seattle show, for anyone not blinded by Sting’s beauty or the pageantry of a once-in-a-lifetime musical event, was weak and not worth the cash.

As far as other musical reviews, I’d suggest you go beyond the lovefest of the Seattle Post Intelligencer article that talked about Sting’s Adonis-like qualities and read the paper’s blog posts from attendees, many of whom I walked out with pissed before the end of the encore.

All the pissing back and forth aside, I am stoked for you that Las Vegas rocked and as I mentioned to Martin…hopefully Australia will rip as well.

I certainly wish all of you the great experience, tempered with realism, that I was expecting.

Best of luck!
ME

Sistermoon | 6/21/2007, 2:17 pm EST

I think it is fantastic they are reworking some of the arrangements it will be interesting to hear the result. And my question is-How can anyone expect Sting to reach notes that he was singing over 20 years ago. In my opinion I think his voice has improved in the last 20 years. Just my two cents.

Peter | 6/20/2007, 1:49 pm EST

Mark Evertz: I can’t speak about the Seattle show, but I saw The Boyz in Vegas last Friday and they were amazingggggg. The crowd that roared for them to come out for 3 encores certainly didn’t feel like they were being cheated, I can promise you that. I have been to over 250 concerts in my life for almost every genre of music out there and this concert was in the top 5. I don’t exactly know what you were expecting out of the concert, but the Police never had a track record of wanting to exactly replicate their studio albums live…..if thats what you were expecting then you don’t know the performance history of the band…..sorry…….and thats more your fault then it is theirs. Just listen to the The Police Live CD. Were they perfect then??? No. Did some of the songs sound different then they did on the studio Albums? Definitely. Did they take risks and jam live then? Yes. Its all right there for your ears to hear as historical record. Taking risks means 2 things…a chance for creating something special and the occaisional train wreck….but if you are being fair, then the trainwrecks were pretty rare during the course of the concert and the ’special moments’ were there also. From the othr Seattle reviews I have read, your opinion was not a majority opinion.
For myself, I can’t wait to see them again in NYC. As for the people here who didn’t like the show….I don’t know what you were looking at………but for those who are expecting note perfect replications of the studio album let me warn you that never was or will be what the Police are about.

Julia | 6/20/2007, 1:27 pm EST

I saw that very first concert and I LOVED it. It felt really special!

Last weekend I went to a wedding on Saltspring Island, the lady, who sat beside me at the dinner table, saw the concert with her son in Edmonton and they LOVED it, too. Love is in the air!

Dear Martin…best of luck on catching a good leg down under. You’ve got to believe that by then they’ll either be a well-oiled machine, stoned by an angry mob of fans or at each others throats in a murderous rage. For your sake, I hope for the former.
Cheers,
M

Sting with no shirt????

ROWRRRRRRR…… ;)

Oh, and I thought they did a fabulous job in Edmonton, AB.
And we drove all the way from Winnipeg, MB. Worth all the hassle to get there, totally - IMHO. And yes, I am a huge fan (loved them since i was a teenager). Saw them in ‘81 & ‘83 (both in Vancouver, B.C.) They were (of course) wonderful then.
They still are. Honest.

Sounds like the boys were having a very off night ! I feel your pain brother; nothing worse than attending a long-awaited reunion concert only to be horribly disappointed and out of pocket $$$.

I’m hoping to catch them when they tour down-under in early 2008. With luck, they’ll have gotten their shit and enthusiam together by then.

Mark Evertz | 6/18/2007, 6:02 pm EST

Proofread yourself, edustin. If your ability to type and craft a coherent sentence is any indication, your level of musical sophistication or ability to discern when you’re getting fed a load of crap is pretty low. Enjoy the N-Sync reunion and give my regards to REO Speedwagon. They’ll both take your $100+ for tickets.

edustin | 6/18/2007, 4:33 pm EST

I was at the Seattle show that Mr. Evertz attended and was blow away by the band’s energy, intensity, and professionalism. I think maybe Mr. Evertz needs to laid. At the very least, it will keep his hands too busy to type.

Mark Evertz | 6/18/2007, 12:45 pm EST

The Police Deserve Jail time

I regret that I let my subscription lapse recently, so if this is already well-covered territory, please indulge my forthcoming rant on the act formerly known as The Police after seeing them in Seattle on June 6.

I feel so completely victimized by these thieves that I had to spew a little venom. After driving a total of 6 hours, buying a ticket in excess of $100 for nosebleed seats and listening to a shell of a band sleepwalk through their own musical footsteps, I’m writing in hopes that Gordon and the boys willread this and consider refunding my money (time+gas+ticket cost), or seriously re-evaluating their motivation for touring in the first place.

With so little crowd interaction, completely un-engaged stage presence or even mildly looking like they wanted to be next to each other, this was the biggest musical disappointment of my lifetime.

We need a little honesty from the band, from Rolling Stone and other news or musical publications on the subject of if The Police are truly in this tour to showcase musical excellence, or simply cash in and make it an “event” rather than a bona fide musical performance. Sound the alarm. This was a fraud.

So awful was this performance that people, including me and the people I came with, actually left before they concluded. This was what we paid for and waited for 25 years to experience? Really?

Every song was filled with Sting’s post-Police pomposity and over orchestration. If I wanted to see Sting be Sting, I would’ve paid for that show. This was a band that fused Punk, Reggae, World Beat and literate Pop in such a profound way that the music world has been left wanting ever since.
Where were they?
Andy ambled the stage looking lost and certainly ill-practiced. Stewart was the only thing about this show that kept me interested, mainly because he looked like he was having fun.

A note to The Police and the musical graveyard of bands looking to lap up the gravy of a reunion or nostalgia tour: All you need to do is act like you give a shit.

And, for God’s sake, try practicing your material before raping us all for hundreds of dollars and forcing us to use binoculars or watch you on the glorified TV Jumbotron? Are you listening Sting? Are you listening Bob Dylan? Are you listening Rolling Stones?

Take a page out of the playbooks of The Who, The Eagles, U2, Bruce Springsteen and Bob Seger (The last two of which I don’t even particularly care for, by the way) — Train and hit the stage like you’re going into battle. Or just bail on the arenas and hit the county fairs where you belong and where we can all expect and pay less.

For now, you’re certainly getting paid enough to at least feign interest.
My bill:
Ticket $110
Hotel: $118
Dinner and drinks: $100
Gas $50
Two days off work:$1600
Pain in my ass fee: $22
Total:$2000
