Journalism Background

Mark worked for thirteen years as a freelance reporter in Central Ontario, publishing more than 300 articles in the Globe and Mail and 400 in the Toronto Star.  In 1994, he moved to Ottawa and joined the Parliamentary Press Gallery, where he wrote for the Toronto Star, CanWest publications, the National Post, the United Nations’ InterPress news service, and legal publications. In the late 1990s, he branched out into magazine writing, with articles in Toronto Life, Canadian Business, Ottawa magazine and other publications. He was nominated for National Magazine Awards in 2000 (gold), 2001 and 2003, and a Canadian Association of Journalists award (magazine writing) in 2003. He was part of a team nominated for a National Newspaper Award in 1979 while a summer student at the London Free Press, and has won several Ontario Newspaper Awards. Mark is author of nine non-fiction books.

Areas of Research or Journalism Production Interest

Mark Bourrie holds a BA in History from the University of Waterloo, a diploma in Public Policy and Administration from the University of Guelph, a Master’s degree in Journalism from Carleton University, and is completing his Ph.D. in History at the University of Ottawa. His Master’s thesis was on the role of the press in the banning of cannabis in Canada. The World War II press censorship system in Canada is the subject of his PhD thesis.

Mark has a keen interest in issues of press coverage of criminal cases, censorship and war reporting.
