When the Commission for Integration and Cohesion produced its final report on local diversity in June 2007 it wanted to redefine just what made a community cohesive. This new interpretation includes a shared sense of collective contribution, positive relationships between people – be it in the workplace, college or high street – a strong trust in local institutions and similar opportunities for people from different ethnic, social and economic backgrounds.

Earlier this month, the Association of Colleges presented its Gold Awards, which recognise the achievements of successful alumni and the significant influence their time in colleges had on their careers. Paul Walsh, the chairman of drinks multinational Diageo, was among the recipients. He took great pleasure in accepting the accolade and said that his studies at Oldham College instilled a tenacity that has "stood him in good stead". The college opened his eyes to business and, in so doing, "to a world of possibilities".

Musicians take note: FE colleges are ideal for budding artists

It's well known to their fans that the Arctic Monkeys studied music at Barnsley College, a fact that no doubt helps attract budding musicians to the college. Leeds College of Technology also celebrates a famous name, albeit an older one. They revealed a plaque this year to mark the fact that Pink Floyd's Syd Barrett wrote the hit "See Emily Play" on site after playing a gig there in April 1967.
