About Our Family Research |
A lot of my family (the relatives I know) live in Kent. Slade Green was once known by outsiders as Cabbage Island and there was only one way in or out. My Family on my Mums side were well established and well known in the Green because they owned a few bussinesses here. My Great Grandad was a Publican of the Pub around the corner from where I live now called 'THE LORD RAGLAN' In fact my Nans funeral wake was held there a short while ago. My Mum and Dad leased a shop which was once owned by part of the family but it has now been replaced by 1 bedroom flats. 4 Generations of this side of my family went to the small School (also gone for the sake of houses) in Slade Green. Sadly my Dads Mum died when he was 4mths old and his older brother died shortly after. My dad came from Plumstead and knows practically nothing about his family (because he has a few Skeletons in the cupboard he thinks). His Uncle Frank fought in WW1 and came home with shell shock but recovered enough to live his life out. My Mums Grandad and Uncle are remembered for their WW1 battles but alas they died in Belgium in 1915 a few weeks apart. They were in the West Kent Buffs division. Their names are on the cross outside St Augustines Church in memory of WW1 and WW2 I remember looking at them every time I walked past with a huge sense of pride that they were my family!!! My parents have just sold their house in the 'Cabbage Island', where they lived for 46 years, and are moving out to Spain. This is why I am researching My dads mysterious past but have not made much progress I am afraid but who knows what I will uncover!!! Julie Hilliard (nee Hellewell)
