Special Convention to Elect the 10th Bishop

The Special Convention to elect the 10th Bishop of Newark will be held at the
Robert Treat Hotel
50 Park Place, Newark, NJ 07102.

The Eucharist will be celebrated at Trinity + St. Philip's Cathedral, 608 Broad Street, Newark, NJ at 8:30 a.m.

Driving Directions to the Robert Treat Hotel New Jersey Turnpike take Exit 15W (Newark/The Oranges). After the toll booth, follow Route 280 West to Exit 15 (Route 21 - Downtown/Arts). Follow Signs to Route 21 South (McCarter Highway) and make right onto Route 21. Follow Route 21 to Center Street and make a right, hotel is on the left side.

Garden State Parkway North take Exit 142 (Route 78). Take Route 78 East until it splits near Newark Airport. Stay right and follow Routes 1&9 North to Route 21 North (McCarter Highway). You will travel across the viaduct into downtown Newark. After crossing the viaduct, stay in the left-turn lane. At the first light, make a left onto Miller Street. Make a right onto Broad Street. Take Broad Street 18 blocks to Park Place (Military Park). Bear right at Park Place, hotel is on the right side.

Garden State Parkway South take Exit 145. Follow signs for Route 280 East. Follow Route 280 East to Exit 15 (Route 21 South - Downtown). At bottom of ramp (traffic light), make a right onto Route 21 South (McCarter Highway). Follow Route 21 to Center Street and make a right. Hotel is on left side.

Parking is available in the Military Park Garage next to the hotel.
Driving Directions to Trinity + St. Philip's Cathedral From New Jersey Turnpike - North or South: Turnpike exit 15W (or 15E) to Route 280 West. Drive approximately two miles to Exit 15, marked "Route 21/Newark"; proceed down the off-ramp to the "T" intersection with Broad Street and turn left onto Broad Street and continue to 608 Broad. The Cathedral will be on the left side and located at the fork where Broad Street and Park Place meet. (Be cautious along Broad Street because of the combination of lane lights and traffic lights.)

From Garden State Parkway North or South: exit 145 for Route 280 East - exit 15 onto Route 21 South - go through the intersection with Bridge Street - make the 3rd right onto Rector Street. (Fraternal Order of Police building is on the corner). Proceed one block to the Cathedral.

From Route 280 East: exit 15 - continue to the "T" intersection with Broad Street and turn left onto Broad Street and continue to the Cathedral at 608 Broad. The Cathedral will be on the left side and located at the fork where Broad Street and Park Place meet. (Be cautious along Broad Street because of the combination of lane lights and traffic lights.)

From the west: Route 78 West to exit 56 (Clinton Avenue). The ramp will bring you onto Hillside Avenue. Continue to Clinton Avenue, turn right onto Clinton to Lincoln Park (bear right at the Roberto Clemente apartments). Turn left onto Broad Street. Continue on Broad Street to Trinity + St. Philip's Cathedral (608 Broad Street) on the right side. Parking is available on the street and in the surrounding lots.
Public Transportation The cathedral and the hotel are within walking distance of Penn Station Newark. The New Jersey Transit Broad Street train station is approximately one mile north of the cathedral. There is bus and subway service from the Broad Street station to Military Park.

Voting Eligibility Members of Convention: The convention shall be composed of the Bishop(s); every Presbyter and Deacon canonically resident in the Diocese on the first day of January immediately preceding the meeting of the Convention except that a vote shall not be accorded Deacons having less than two years in holy orders or to retired priests whose service in the Diocese was for less than five years prior to retirement.

  Three (3) Lay Deputies from each Parish in union with the Convention and from each Mission (Article II (4), Constitution of the Diocese of Newark.)

Voting Procedures The voting shall be by ballot, the Clergy and Laity voting by orders. A concurrent majority of both orders shall be necessary to constitute an election. The majority ballot system will require a #2 pencil that will be provided to you. In this system, you vote for one candidate by filling in the box next to the candidate's name.
. Fill in the box completely.
. Do not make any stray marks on the form.
. Erase clearly any mark you wish to change.
  The tellers will receive the ballots from each individual deputy. When you hand in your completed ballot, a blank ballot for the next round will be given to you. Do not ask someone else to hand in your ballot.


Alternates and Visitors Only the Clergy and Lay Deputies will be seated at the tables on the Convention floor for business sessions. Alternates and visitors will be directed to a visitors' section by a member of the Arrangements Committee. If an alternate replaces a deputy, the alternate is considered a full deputy with all privileges of that office.
