Welcome to:

The 36th International Physics Olympiad 2005
July 3 - 12 , Salamanca , Spain

Welcome letter to the participants in the International Physics Olympiad from Spanish Minister of Education and Science, Ms María Jesús San Segundo Gómez de Cadiñanos

The Ministry of Education and Science feels honoured that the International Physics Olympiad is taking place for the first time in Spain in 2005, the "International Year of Physics". In this year many Spanish cities will commemorate the contributions to Physics of Einstein, whose example should motivate the students who will participate in the Thirty-Sixth International Physics Olympiad.

In 1988 Spain was invited to this Olympiad for the first time, and we were then very happy to accept this invitation, having in mind that such an event could take place in our country sometime in the future. In 1995, in line with the Olympiad Statutes, we offered to have it in Spain, where young people from all over the world could enrich themselves sharing their scientific experiences, living in an environment which they will remember for many years to come.

We consider the Thirty-Sixth International Physics Olympiad to be a scientific and human event of paramount importance: Young scientists from different countries, speaking different languages, and having diverse religions, believes and customs get together with a common denominator: their dedication to the study of Physics. We will do everything possible to make a success of this Olympiad and to make it an unforgettable experience for all of you.

I sincerely welcome all participants who come to Spain and to Salamanca, wishing you all the best and successful results in this Olympiad.

María Jesús San Segundo Gómez de Cadiñanos
Spanish Minister of Education and Science

Welcome Message from the Chairwoman of the Organizing Committee, Ms Ángela Calvo

It is a great honour for us to organize the 36th International Physics Olympiad. We heartily welcome all the delegates from every country which have sent their students here to take part in this now firmly established competition.

When the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports together with the Spanish Royal Society of Physics decided to select the region of Castille and León, and particularly the city and University of Salamanca, we felt deeply honoured by such a great privilege.

Ángela Calvo
Chairwoman of the Organizing Committee

This is yet one more challenge accepted by this University which has been providing instruction for 800 years and where the discipline of Physics has played a decisive role for many centuries. As early as the 16th century, the book De revolutionibus orbium coelestium (The revolution of the celestial bodies, 1543) by Nicholas Copernicus was adopted as an essential text in our Studium.

Science has always been a language and meeting place common to all countries, above their cultural and ethnic diversity. You, with your presence in this IPHO, are contributing to making the universality of this branch of Science (Physics) more evident in our country.

Likewise, it is your effort that enhances an atmosphere of fellowship and cultural enrichment among all the young people coming here from so many different countries and cultures throughout this nine-day meeting.

They, today's youth, once again will be the transmitters of Science as a universal language, as a way of mutual understanding among nations, as a promoter of peace, as progress and welfare for all countries, in short as a symbol of friendship and tolerance among all people and cultures.

For all these reasons, it is for us a great pleasure to welcome you once again and thank you deeply for your participation and your presence in this competition.
