The state of Alaska is unique in many ways; one that most people probably don’t know about is the fact that it has several PUBLIC boarding high schools. Because there are so many remote villages and communities in the state, and so many miles separating these communities, these public boarding schools can often provide students with larger schools that have more opportunities than they may receive at home. At these schools, students arrive each fall excited about the opportunities offered, but many leave before the end of the first semester to return home. Why is this? One reason cited by the students was that they felt no attachment to their school and that “no one really cared about them.”

What can we do about this? In the four boarding schools across the state, much care is taken to hire the best instructors and administrative staff, but not much focus had been put onto the hiring of the housing staff. That is until now. Galena school district was awarded a FIPSI grant that is allowing Alaskan boarding high schools, as well as two college freshmen halls, to put professionals into the residence halls and other buildings to engage students and work to create a sense of community among the students and staff.

Each site is measuring the success of their efforts through questionnaires and surveys, and thus far these efforts have led to vast improvement in the retention of students. This is one of the first joint efforts between high schools and universities in the country and the possibilities are endless.
