Stephanie’s Return

Stephanie Lora when she first appeared as a Model of Queens in 2005, while she attended Francis Lewis High School around the corner from the Trib offices.

“Ah, what the heck. We’ll let her write, too.”

That was the last thing we said about Stephanie Lora when we featured her as a Model of Queens while this hottie was a junior in high school in 2005.

Well, Stephanie still hasn’t written for us, but she is still planning to. This Mary Louis Academy grad has been taking English and Journalism classes when she began her tenure at Hunter College last fall, for which she received a partial scholarship.

Her modeling workload hasn’t increased much since appearing in the paper simply due to the fact that she had to put it on hold to concentrate on her grades during her senior year of high school, but she is ready to change that. She is still seeking to get more exposure as a model and expand this part of her career. Her motivations for doing so are many.

“Obviously financial help would be great for books and everything,” Stephanie said. “But at this point, exposure is the most important thing, so I can build my portfolio and get more easily recognized.”

Here’s hoping Steph keeps modeling and during the four years it will take her to complete her degree; let’s hope she likes to intern, preferably with us!

Astoria's Glamazons

Who said Americans don’t like their women with a little meat on their bones? Once again, the Glamazons danced and sang their way into the hearts of many as they made it to the America’s Got Talent Top 10.

The Astoria-based Glamazons, Candy Apple, Lady Finger, Ginger Snap and Carmella, dub themselves the plus-size Pussy cat Dolls and put the sex in sexy, enticing viewers with a flash of leg and just a little shimmy – or shake.

With fishnets, lingerie, and moves bad enough to hurt somebody, the Glamazons gave America a quadruple dose of fever with their rendition of “You Give Me Fever.”

Funny Pages

A part of Astoria funnyman Ted Alexandro could be seen in the July issue of “Maxim” magazine.

Get your mind out of the gutter.

An authentic Alexandro antic was featured on the jokes page in the edition boasting Megan Fox on the cover.

“There’s been a lot of debate about the war,” says Alexandro. “Democrats are saying ‘pull out.’ Republicans are saying ‘finish the job.’ It’s like an angel and the devil on my shoulders during sex.

Maybe I am a Republican.”

Ba-zing!

Ja rule

Hollis Rapper Ja Rule hands out Christmas gifts to kids in Southeast Queens through the L.I.F.E. Camp group.

Rapper Ja Rule, originally from Hollis, will be giving something back to his native borough besides just his gift of music.

Ja Rule, whose real name is Jeffrey Atkins, will host the L.I.F.E. Camp Weekend held Aug. 17 to 19. L.I.F.E. is an acronym for “Love Ignites Freedom Through Education.” The Queens-based organization helps at-risk youth ages 13 to 24.

Rule will attend an annual BBQ put on by the organization held at Craigmeur Park in Morristown, NJ. Transportation to the park will depart from York College in Jamaica at 8:30 a.m.; $50 covers the trip, food and park entrance.

On Friday, the movie “80’s Babies,” produced by students of L.I.F.E Camp, will be screened at the Tribeca Cinemas Screening Room at 7 p.m.

How’s that for representing your hood?

Musical Jet Fuel?

Okay, so maybe they don’t play in Queens anymore, and maybe they plan to pull their operations completely out of New York State, but the New York Jets are still a favorite of the Gang Green faithful here in Queens.

But when the Once And Future Super Bowl Champs showed up at Hofstra University out on Long Island for training camp last week, they were not greeted by the pulsating rhythms of the latest hip-hop hero or some pop princess thumping out a pounding beat to help them move their feet.

No, the music was a bit older than that – much older.

Coach Eric Mangini sent Chad and the boys to school with thinking man’s music – a little bit of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. This is the very music that gets played to babies because it helps stimulate cognitive thought and actually is thought to help improve a child’s ability to learn.

Jets fans can only hope that the Baby Einstein concept takes hold for Gang Green this year, and that the team doesn’t suffer the fate of the legendary composer – dying at an early age with lots of promise.
