It's the first day at the School of Language, and David Brewis is intently practicing his vowel sounds. "Ah ooh eee oh" and so forth, repeated ad nauseum, as if in a mirror to watch the shape his mouth takes. But Brewis, who with his brother Peter records as Field Music, makes the best use of his solo rote practice-- looping himself, adding some selectively-placed guitar/bass/drums, and creating "Rockist Pt. 1". Those who keep track of Field Music's own Lennon/McCartney songwriting setup shouldn't be too surprised at "Rockist"'s songcraft: this is the Brewis of Tones of Town's "Sit Tight" and "Give it Lose it Take It", whose lyrics are often abstracted fragments of tiny conversational moments, and who punctuates "Rockist"'s first big break with the line "What's that/ You said?" And like Sunderland, UK's own Cornelius, this is the Brewis who organizes each musical item like a tiny bureau of colorful fishing lures, each one separate from its mates, then occasionally spills the lot and records the clamor. Like his pre-Field Music band the New Tellers, School of Language seems to be another workshop for Brewis to experiment with his own musical grammar-- "Rockist" perhaps being shorthand for "Rock Scientist." A-E-I-O-U and sometimes, well, why not?
