Weekend Box Office — September 14-16, 2007 (Actuals)

Warner Bros.’ The Brave One led another slow week with $13.47 million from 2,755 theaters.

Year-to-year the top 10 box office was up by ­5.9%.

There were two other new (wide) releases in the top 10 this weekend. In third place was Mr. Woodcock with $8.76 million from 2,231 theaters. The New Line Cinema film paced ahead of Freestyle Releasing’s Dragon Wars: D-War which took in $5.04 million from 2.275 theaters.

Moving to the holdovers, 3:10 to Yuma dropped just 36.4% and one spot in its second week to second place with $8.93 million from a slightly expanded 2,667 (+15) theaters ($28.33 million through 10 days of release).

Rounding out the top 5 was Superbad in fourth place, down one spot and 32.4% $5.11 million from 2,910 theaters. The Judd Apatow-produced comedy now stands at $111.24 million through 31 days of release.

Moving to the bottom five, we come to Halloween in sixth place (down four spots and 48.8%) with $4.87 million from 3,051 theaters.  Though dropping by significant amounts in week 2, and now week 3, the film has done pretty good business, as it now stands at $51.12 million through 17 days of release.

In seventh place was The Bourne Ultimatum, down two spots and 27.3% with 4.13 million from 2,611 theaters.  That makes $216.17 million through 45 days of release for the action-thriller.

Balls of Fury took eighth place with $3.32 million from 2,758 theaters (down two spots and 41.2%), pushing its total to $28.86 million through 19 days of release.

Taking ninth place, down two spots and 32.4% was Rush Hour 3 with $3.30 million from 2,208 theaters ($133.16 million through 38 days of release).
Mr. Bean’s Holiday fell to eighth place (down two spots and 42.9%) with $3.41 million from an expanded 1,778 (+13) theaters, lifting the comedy over the 1/4 million mark domestically with $25.09 million through 17 days of release.

Ninth place went to The Nanny Diaries with $3.19 million from 2,444 theaters (down two spots and 37.8%). Through 17 days of release, the film has taken in $20.88 million.

And lastly in 10th place was Mr. Bean’s Holiday, which was down two spots and 20.1% with $2.73 million from 1,770 theaters, pushing its total to $28.55 million through 24 days of release.
A few other interesting facts about the weekend:

  • The Brave One had the best per theater average of any movie in the top 10, with $4,889/theater out of 2,755 sites.
  • Mr. Bean’s Holiday was the film with the smallest drop week-to-week of any movie in the top 10, with its 20.1% drop.
  • Balls of Fury had the lowest per theater average of any movie in the top 10 ($1,205/theater from 2,758 sites).
  • Halloween had the largest weekly loss at 48.8%.
  • And lastly, year-to-year (vs. September 15-17, 2006) the top 10 films were up by $3.31M or 5.9% ($56.35M vs. $59.66M). That weekend saw Sony’s Gridiron Gang take first place, holding off three other new releases. It’s $14.41 million was enough to overcome the $10.01 million generated by Universal’s The Black Dahlia (second place), the $6.06 million from Fox’s Everyone’s Hero (third place) and the $4.63 million from Paramount/DreamWork’s The Last Kiss (fifth place).
