Another Aide Leaves Amway

Published: March 21, 1984

An Amway Corporation vice president said today that he will retire Friday, but that his departure is ''not particularly'' connected to a continuing management shake-up.

C. Dale Discher, 59 years old, said his early retirement was ''amiable,'' and declined to comment further.

Mr. Discher; William J. Jr., executive vice president for corporate services, and Amway's co- founders, Richard M. DeVos and Jay VanAndel, were indicted in Canada last year on several criminal charges, including allegations that they underreported the value of goods brought into Canada.

Those charges were dropped this year after Amway and its Canadian subsidiary pleaded guilty to criminal customs fraud charges. The companies paid a $20.2 million fine.

Amway, the nation's second-largest direct-sales company behind Avon Products Inc., still faces related civil charges.

Mr. Halliday announced March 8 that he would take early retirement effective April 1. Also on March 8, two other top-level managers - the treasurer, William Falkenstern, 49, and the director of international public affairs, Noel A. Black, 51 - said they were leaving.
