Ealing is the fifth most diverse borough in London, according to the Office for National Statistics' diversity index. Less than 45% of its residents are of White British ethnic origin.

The Southall Broadway area of the borough is officially the least white part of London, and indeed Britain for that matter, with White British people making up just 9% of its residents at the time of the 2001 census.

Diversity index score

0.75

The Office for National Statistics' diversity index is calculated as the probability that two people chosen at random from a given area would be from different ethnic groups, even if neither of them were white. For example, a score of .30 would mean that there would be a 30% probability.

However, other parts of Ealing, such as Hanger Lane and Bedford Lane, are more than two-thirds White British.

Southall is primarily an Asian residential district, and is often known as 'Little India". Over 55% of Southall's population of 70,000 is of either Indian or Pakistani ethnic origin. Across the entire borough, there are 74,000 Asian people - very nearly 25% of its total population. In other words, there are barely twice as many White British people as Asian people in the entire borough. Indians are by far the dominant sub-group, with nearly 50,000 people. One in six of all Ealing residents is Indian. The second largest Asian sub-group is the Other category, which numbers close to 12,000.

The Other White group, at over 27,000 people, or 9% of the total population, is the next largest ethnic minority group. This is likely to include a large part of the Iraqi population (3,000 people) living in Ealing. Black people form the next largest group, at 26,500 (9% of the population). There is a small majority of people of Caribbean origin (13,500) over those of African descent (11,000).
