Educational ObjectGreetings from the Chair ives
It is my great pleasure to welcome you to our website, whether you are our current/potential students or their parents, our alumni, our colleagues, our friends, or our supporters. The Department has achieved many recognizable milestones in recent years in our pursuit of excellence in education and research and I am pleased to have this opportunity to present them to you. With the addition of our newly approved PhD program, the Department now offers five degree programs and currently has 12 tenure/tenure track faculty members with three more to be added in the next three years. We are eager to share with you our excitement and I hope you find this website convenient and informative.

As some of you may know, in August 2005, the Department received approval to offer the first PhD program at Lamar University due mainly to Dean Hopper's leadership and vision, the University's continued support, and the department faculty's outstanding research and teaching records. Over the last years, our research funding has more than tripled to nearly five million dollars and our instructional and research facilities for our graduate and undergraduate programs have been significantly enhanced. Our alumni support has continued to be strong and our placement for our BS graduates has continued to be near 100% in recent years. More good news is forthcoming as the Department is growing rapidly especially because of the establishment of the PhD program.

On June 1, 2007 I became the third Department Chair in the last 33 years of the Department history, following Dr. Hopper (1974-1999) and Dr. Li (1999-2007). My goal for the Department will be to continue to advance it toward excellence through working with students, alumni, colleagues, friends and supporters. I always welcome your comments and will be looking forward to hearing from you whenever you have any thoughts for our Department.

Thank you very much for your interests in our Department!
