Id today; festive mood in State

MALAPPURAM: Muslims throughout the State will celebrate Id-ul-Fitr on Saturday, marking the culmination of the Ramzan fast.

All Kazis confirmed the beginning of Shawwal month on Saturday, as no one in the State sighted the new moon on Thursday evening.

Among the leading Kazis who gave their verdict to complete the fast were Panakkad Sayed Mohammedali Shihab Thangal, Indian Union Muslim League State president who holds jurisdiction over 300 mahals in the State; Nalakath Mohammed Koya Baqavi and S.V. Ahamed Koya, Kozhikode Kazis; Hamza Moulavi, Palayam Imam of Thiruvananthapuram; Kadakkal Abdul Azeez Moulavi, Kerala Muslim Jam’at Federation State president and Khateeb of Kollam Juma Masjid; and Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar, All-India Jamiyyathul Ulama general secretary and Kazi of a large number of mahals.

Other important Kazis who directed the community to celebrate Id-ul-Fitr on Saturday were Sayed Pookoya Thangal, Thrissur Kazi; P.V. Abdullakutty Moulavi, Koottayi Kazi; P.T. Abdul Khadir Musliar, Beypore Kazi; Sayed O.P.M. Muthukoya Thangal, Malappuram Kazi; O.K. Abdullakutty Musliar, Tirurangadi Kazi; P.A. Abdulla Moulavi, Mattannur Kazi; Cherussery Zainuddin Musliar, Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulema general secretary; Makhdoom Sayed Muthukoya Thangal, Ponnani Kazi; and Panakkad Sayed Umerali Shihab Thangal, Wayanad Kazi.

Celebrations began with the setting of the sun on Friday evening when people completed 30 days of fasting. Soon after Magrib (sunset) prayers, the chorus of Takbeer was heard from mosques across the State. Most shops, particularly garment stores, witnessed unusual rush on Friday evening. Even amid the frenzied shopping, people were seen distributing packets of rice as their Fitr Zakat (obligatory alms).

Women and children busied themselves with painting their hands with henna, while men procured the things needed for a sumptuous Id meal.
