Many of you have expressed confusion as to what the illustration accompanying the latest Freakonomics column means, so I went ahead and posed the question to illustrator David M. Brinley. He replies:

“The couple is a metaphor for sexual desires and how his sexual identity has been influenced by the points made in the article. His ‘new’ identity and desire for women is demonstrated by him seeing through the layering of the dotted shielding arm (past identity and fear) — I also wanted the illo to have a back and forth effect… having the reader ponder this idea of choosing one’s identity/sexual relationships.”

The new issue of People lists the 10 best-selling movies, books, CDs, DVDs, etc. of the year. Freakonomics was the No. 7 book among those first published in 2005. (The new Harry Potter was No. 1 by a landslide.) Here, from the other categories, are the other No. 7’s.

#7 DVD: Ray
#7 TV show: NFL Monday Night Football
#7 concert ticket: Kenny Chesney

I can’t quite discern a pattern between all the No. 7’s, but perhaps you can.

If you love Lucinda Williams, as I do, and want more of her songs than presently exist, you would do well to get Carrie Rodriguez's Seven Angels on a Bicycle. There are a lot of similarities between Rodriguez and Williams, but Rodriguez plainly has her own wild thing going on. "50's French Movie," e.g., has a fantastically nasty groove. (SJD)

Mad Men is an amazingly rich new TV series on AMC, created by Sopranos writer/producer Matthew Weiner. Although it's set among advertising men in 1960, it isn't really about advertising any more than The Sopranos was about garbage collection. Great, nuanced writing, splendid acting, and so much smoking and drinking that you get a hangover just from watching. (SJD)
