Welcome to the St Helena Website

Mr Michael Clancy: Governor of St Helena

HE the Governor
  Mr. Michael Clancy

Welcome to the St Helena Government. St Helena is an Overseas Territory of the United Kingdom. It is one of the worlds most isolated islands situated some 1600 km off the west coast of Africa in the South Atlantic Ocean. Currently the only access is by sea primarily by the Royal Mail Ship, St Helena.

After its discovery by the Portuguese in 1502, St Helena became a haven for sea travelers because of its plentiful supply of water, lush vegetation and equable climate. Today over 500 years on, we continue to welcome visitors who delight in discovering this beautiful and unique destination. St Helena has few natural resources and is heavily dependent on outside aid to maintain a reasonable standard of living. "Saints" as the around 4000 inhabitants are known are warm and friendly and welcome visitors whether they land here or visit our Website. Working with the British Government we have begun a process, which will lead to the building of an airport and the introduction of a regular international air service by 2010. This exciting development will make it easier for tourists and investors to visit.

In the meantime a shipping schedule between Ascension, Saint Helena, Namibia and Cape Town has made it easier to visit. St Helena welcomes inward investors as well as visitors. We hope that this Website has whetted your appetite and we look forward to welcoming you.

Governor and Commander in Chief
