Frank Stephenson began his new position as Director of Design at Alfa Romeo today, CDN can reveal.

Stephenson left his role as Head of the Fiat, Lancia and Commercial Vehicle Styling Center last month and is now effectively filling a role that has been unoccupied since Wolfgang Egger left to become head of Audi's Style Center. Since Lorenzo Ramaciotti has been recently appointed to a newly created position as Cheif of Design at Fiat, Stephenson's previous position is now vacant.

During his time at Fiat, Stephenson oversaw the creation of the forthcoming Cinquecento, the Lancia Delta HPE concept and headed the development of the Fiat Punto and Bravo models. It is as yet unclear as to what future projects he will be charged with at Alfa Romeo.

A graduate of Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Stephenson was appointed Director of Ferrari-Maserati Concept Design and Development in 2002. He penned the design of the Maserati MC12, Ferrari F430 and also oversaw the introduction of the Maserati Quattroporte and Ferrari Scaglietti.

Prior to his move to Italy, Stephenson spent 11 years working as a senior designer at BMW where he developed the X5 SAV and garnered acclaim for creating the new MINI in 2001.
