After completing a rare pre-season with the CA Brumbies in 2005, Stirling Mortlock produced one of the finest provincial seasons of his nine-year career. The CA Brumbies’ skipper was unstoppable as he combined his trademark hard running with brutal defence. The 29-year-old finished the season as the CA Brumbies’ top try scorer with nine tries – one behind the competition’s top try scorer, Lome Fa’atau of the Hurricanes. Mortlock, the form centre of the 2006 Super 14, will again be a key player for the CA Brumbies in 2007 and a crucial component for the Wallabies during the World Cup in France. Born in Sydney, Mortlock began his rugby career as a four-year-old with Lindfield. Mortlock, having attended The King’s School, joined the CA Brumbies in 1998 and has since become one of the stalwarts of Australian rugby. Mortlock succeeded George Gregan as CA Brumbies captain in 2004, before a knee injury robbed him of the opportunity to lead the side to their second Super 12 title. The lead-by-example skipper has proven to be a natural skipper and, in Gregan’s absence, was given the opportunity to captain his country on the 2006 Wallaby Spring Tour. Just seven matches shy of passing 100 Super 14 matches, Mortlock remains the CA Brumbies’ all-time highest point-scorer (with 825 points) and second only to Joe Roff as top tryscorer (45 tries). Mortlock’s favourite bands are Coldplay and U2. He enjoys spending time watching movies and listening to his iPod.
