Third-seeded Justine Henin-Hardenne of Belgium captured the 2003 Acura Classic singles title as she won a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over fellow Belgian Kim Clijsters before a capacity crowd of 6,500.
On a warm, breezy day on Stadium Court at the La Costa Resort and Spa, Henin-Hardenne, who was making her Acura Classic debut this year, dropped the first set in 32 minutes as Clijsters raced out to a 4-0 lead.
Clijsters went on to serve out the match 5-3 and looked in complete control of the match.
During the break between sets, Henin-Hardenne was treated by the WTA Tour trainer for blisters on her right foot.
When play resumed, Henin-Hardenne picked up the level of her game as she committed only six unforced errors in the second set.
Clijsters served to stay in the second at 5-2, but Henin-Hardenne evened the match when Clijsters double faulted at 0-40.
In the third set, each player held serve through the first seven games.
With Clijsters serving at 3-4, Henin-Hardenne took a 5-3 lead as Clijsters netted a forehand to end a 14-point game.
That would prove to be the turning point of the day as Henin-Hardenne served out the match at love. On her first match point, she hit a perfectly executed forehand crosscourt drop volley winner.
The champion had a total of five aces and 26 winners in the match, which took one-hour and 49 minutes to complete. Henin-Hardenne was also successful when coming to the net as she won 17 of 20 points at the net.
I think I started off really well. I just ran out of gas a little bit in the second and third, said Clijsters, who finished the match with a total of 48 unforced errors.
Henin-Hardenne won her 11th career WTA Tour singles title and fifth title of 2003.
Henin-Hardenne improves her 2003 match record to 51-7.
Henin-Hardenne has won three of the last four head-to-head meetings with Clijsters.
Henin-Hardenne is ranked third in the world.
