The Company of Mysterious Journeys
A level 1.3 Society tour

Halloween in Transilvania

On orders from the Count, this year's Halloween (which is his birthday, also the beginning of the Vampiric Year) takes place in S-E Transylvania, Romania, at his chalet in Poiana Brasov.

De-classified from the TSD file 2005/O/B/ MT-CD: At midnight on October the 31st, 2005, the newly-elected Miss Transylvania ran screaming away with her fiance, rather than become Countess Dracula, as she should. Although the Count could have squashed the fugitives, he smiled and let them get away, whispering: "I too can love"

INVITATION
The Count delegates his Transylvanian Society of Dracula to invite all the ladies attending this year's Halloween party to compete for the title of Miss Transylvania on October 30. The winner must accept to become Countess Dracula at Halloween time,to be the pair of the Count till October 31 , 2008.

"Welcome, enter freely and of your own will"

WARNING:

Are you serious? How can you even consider going to Transylvania in the spookiest of nights- when all the werewolves, vampires, ghosts, zombies, witches, banshees, pixies, trolls, oni, assuans are at large? All the metaphysical risk is yours. It is true that the "Little Shop from Hell" will reappear for a few hours selling "Indulgences" for 5 sins each and "After-life Insurances", but will it suffice? Besides, who entered Transylvania to leave unchanged? We sincerely advise you to go to a Halloween party nextdoor, in the safety of the plastic masks and TV movies-not to the Centre of the draculistic world. Does your mama know about your intention? Anyway, please read the contents of this tour carefully before any hasty booking. At your disposal for further information Company of Mysterious Journeys (logistics).

DAY 1

Sat, Oct. 27 NOTHING TO FEAR

Welcome in Bucharest, the capital of Romania. Your innocence will protect you for a while.

  • transfer to your hotel
  • cocktail, briefing, Q & A.Get hold of your "Survival Diploma" that gets stamped along the route (your relatives will know how far you reached in this foolish endeavour).
  • dinner and overnight in Bucharest

DAY 2

Sun, Oct. 28 PRINCE VLAD THE IMPALER-DRACULA (1431-1476)

Is Count Dracula (a supernatural entity)the same person as Prince Vlad Dracula? Let's find out.

  • brief sightseeing of Bucharest (first mentioned in writing in a document signed "Prince Vlad" and dated September 20, 1459).
  • depart across the Valahian field toward the Carpathians (2 hours), to the historical fortress Dracula - Poienari. On route, touch a legend with your fingers: Mason Manole's church in the town of Curtea de Arges.
  • circle the fortress of Poienari, perched on a hill, listening to its many, wondrous legends.
  • then enter the village of Aref, across the hill - the only village in Romania remembering Vlad after 530 years. Regress in time with our show"The Nightof Prince Vlad the Impaler-Dracula", then dine on Arefean specialties.
  • overnight in private farm-houses (heating, bathroom, TV, telephone), in Aref (for groups over 30, overnight in a near-by hotel).

DAY 3

Mon.Oct 29 TRANSYLVANIA

Morning:optional climb to the ruins of fortress Poienari (1456 steps).

  • cross the Carpathians into Transylvania. Time for initiations into the supernatural, society-style. You will share into the lofty secrets stored by the TSD.
  • arrive at "Acasa la Dracula", the Count's chalet in the resort of Poiana Brasov (1000 m. altitude). You will be given the rules of survival (the same as for Castle Dracula in the Borgo Pass) just before arrival, so you could remember and obey them. You know why? "Because Transylvania is not England, and there will be many strange things to you"as the Count bluntly put it to Jonathan Harker. It is tomorrow that the Count will join us (under some disguise or another)
  • dinner at the best restaurant of S-E Transylvania ("The Outlaws' Cabin")
  • overnight in Poiana Brasov, 'Acasa la Dracula" (4 star)

DAY 4

Tue, Oct. 30 SECRET EVENTS TURNED PUBLIC

The globalization has not bypassed The House Dracula. Just 12 years ago, the yearly election of Miss Transylvania was top secret, confined to the lasses of Romania. The cosmopolite Count opened the event to the whole world: let the best win (doesn't he deserve the best, isn't he the sexiest immortal superman?)

  • visit castle Bran (1377), of weird association with both the fictional and the historical Dracula (lots of weird shopping, too).Visit fortress Rasnov.
  • dinner with a difference:witness the election of Miss Transylvania, and do participate in it, dear ladies. The Count has good eyes and good taste, he may choose You(the location is kept secret, to discourage the crowds). There will be several other prizes offered to the merituous. You are then invited to Miss Transylvania's ball (dear gentlemen, you may then boast of having danced with Her)
  • overnight in Poiana Brasov ("Acasa la Dracula")
  • optionals: casino, night-club, cabaret, disco) (By the way: did you recognize the disguised Count who came to see his new bride?)

DAY 5

Wed, Oct 31 HALLOWEEN in TRANSYLVANIA

Free for swimming-pool, sauna, massage, beauty-parlour, cable-car ride to the top of Mt. Postavaru (1904 m), strolls and jogging, horse-riding, bowling. It wouldn't harm to write down your last wishes (just in case).

As the night falls (early), the friendly woods turn unfriendly, so don't stray too far from the lights of the resort. Garlic may help. The realm of shadows unleashes its worst inhabitants, the vampires and ghosts leave their graves (often, riding in their rotten coffins), the witches mount their brooms, so it is a good idea to disguise yourselves as one of these creatures. Should you last till midnight (highly unlikely) you will witness the investiture of Miss Transylvania as Countess Dracula (everything comes at a price). You may then invite the Countess to dance, if you dare. Sure, there will be the usual auction and sale of rare Count Dracula Treasures, the prize for the "Halloweenest" costume, the official fortune-teller of the Count at your service (the Count is sooo superstitious), maybe the fastest cartoonist in the world (in the Guiness book of records), quite a few Transylvanians (they do exist, you know) - one of whom will be the Count himself.

The alternative to the above is to lock yourself in your room, knowing that Transylvania will change you anyway.

  • place of the Halloween party: the Count's chalet (please keep this location secret)
  • overnight in Poiana Brasov ("Acasa la Dracula")

DAY 6

Thur, Nov. 1 REWARDS FOR SURVIVORS

Please check your reflection in the mirror, and shadow-till noon.

  • the few survivors are invited to visit mediaeval Brasov the second city of Transylvania (many and great are the secrets of a mediaeval town).
  • optional: win yourself a nobility title: "knight"in "The Order of Transylvanian Knights". This title is not for sale, it is based on personal merit: try to pass 7 chivalry tests under the critical eyes of the knights of the Citadel of Brasov (15 century): archery; strength of arm; walking on a beam; splitting an apple by sword; jumping through a fire; answering a riddle; dancing a minuet. Should you be able to pass the tests, the Castellan and his court of knights, ladies-in-waiting, jester (beware of that jester, ignore him) will activate the ceremonies: oath, sword-on-shoulder, knighthooding diploma, the medallion (coat-of-arms).The small fee does not buy you the title. It pays for the expenses of the Castellan's court, for the diploma-in-tube, the medallion (this last expense will be returned to you, should you fail the tests).
  • dinner with a mediaeval floor-show
  • overnight in Poiana Brasov
  • optionals.

DAY 7

Fri, Nov. 2 TRANSYLVANISHLY YOURS

How does one change, after entering Transylvania? Everyone changes differently. One thing is sure: you'll be an expert in supernatural entities, in ancient, mediaeval and modern history-therefore richer, wiser, even if you left your shadow in Transylvania. But that is a small price for your new status, isn't it? And yes, the chances are that we'll be seeing more of you (the "Transylvanian spell"). Have a safe journey home

  • departure to the airport
  • departure from Romania.
