Derek Wilson, born in NZ in 1922, spent his formative years on a Wairarapa coastal sheep station where he developed a healthy respect for Earth and its resources. He began work in 1939 as a draughtsman in the Wellington office of architects Mitchell & Mitchell. After serving in World War II as a pilot in the Fleet Air Arm, he attended the School of Architecture at Auckland University, 1946 - 1949. Derek worked as an architect in London for several years, for Connel, Ward & Lucas, Sir Hugh Casson, and the London County Council. In 1957, Derek joined with Bill Toomath in an architectural practice partnership in Wellington. They were joined in 1972 by Don Irvine, structural engineer, and Grahame Anderson, architect.
