SF Chronicle Endorses Mark DeSaulnier for State Assembly

5/26/2006 6:33:44 PM

Martinez – The San Francisco Chronicle has endorsed Contra Costa County Supervisor Mark DeSaulnier in his bid for California’s 11th Assembly District (AD) seat.

The Chronicle Editorial states:

“THERE IS more than a little animus in the race between Mark DeSaulnier and Laura Canciamilla in Contra Costa County's 11th Assembly District.

Canciamilla has been sending out harsh campaign mailers, accusing DeSaulnier of being too cozy with developers and uncaring about women's health issues.

On Thursday, in a joint appearance at The Chronicle, DeSaulnier challenged her at one point to back up her rhetoric about his alleged approval of ''18,000 homes'' of ill-conceived sprawl with one specific example. She could not. In fact, her characterization is unfair. DeSaulnier has been a force in the county's move toward "smart growth" policies that lessen sprawl and its resulting effects on traffic and the environment.

There are plenty of political dynamics behind this race. Canciamilla is the wife of termed-out Assemblyman Joe Canciamilla, whose maverick ways sometimes irritated his Democratic colleagues; DeSaulnier is an eight-year county supervisor who has developed good relations with many regional and state leaders.

But the race should not be decided on the basis of friends, relatives or political alliances. This seat should go to the candidate who has proved an ability to take on issues that matter, balance conflicting concerns and work effectively to get things done.

Mark DeSaulnier is the choice.

DeSaulnier was appointed to serve as Supervisor for the Contra Costa County District IV in March 1994. He was re-elected in 1998. In 2002, he retained his seat with 80 percent of the vote, the highest percentage recorded in a contested election in the history of the county.

Before becoming Supervisor, he served as the Mayor of Concord, the largest city in Contra Costa County, and as a City Councilmember from 1991 to 1993. DeSaulnier has been appointed to many regional boards and commissions, including the California Air Resources Board, the Association of Bay Area Governments, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and Bay Area Air Quality Management District.

Assembly District 11 is currently represented by Joseph Canciamilla. The district includes portions of Contra Costa County.
