My Device: Cingular 3125

I purchased a Cingular 3125 on Sept. 19 2006.  I noticed very quickly that the battery cover dents and scratches *very* easily.  Then, almost exactly 2 mos later the outer LCD was broken after I took it out of my padded backpack pocket.  The casing is entirely intact, not a crack in the plastic; the phone appears to be working fine aside from the outer screen.

I've contacted Cingular about warranty repair and, as far as I can tell, it's considered "physical damage" and isn't covered.  Before this phone, I had an old AudioVox 5600 that's been dropped, banged up, squished and it's still humming along fine (I'm not suggesting this should be the norm for usage.)  When I visited the Cingular store where I purchased the phone the salesman said that "you can sneeze wrong with one of these and it'll break."

That leaves me with a couple of questions:

  1. Has anyone else had a similar experience with the Cingular 3125?
  2. Does anyone know of a way to replace just the outer LCD? (I've contacted htcamerica.net.)

Thanks

Henry

I have found the 3125 to be pretty rugged.  I keep mine in my pocket and it gets bumped all of the time, no issues.  I find it more reliable than my MPx220, which was really dented and scratched up.

I have a tiny impact dent in my battery cover.  I have no idea how I got it.  I keep it in the sleeve pocket though of my uniform and I bang into things constantly.  So far I have been impressed with the durability of the unit.  It has not suffered any major "open" drops yet.  You will see one other thread about a cracked external LCD in the forum if you conduct a search.

I've had external screens break on 2 of these phones. They replaced the first one under the insurance program. And the 2nd screen broke within 2 weeks. I believe the phone is poorly designed - that is, the flips are too long and create too much acceleration when you shut the phone, causing the external screen to crack.

I want a different phone - anyone have any luck in convincing Cingular that this is a lemon?

Weird, I think this is one of the best built, sturdy phones I've ever had.  I never use a case, carry it in my pocket, drop it on the counter when I get home and it still looks like new.  I don't think you're going to have much luck convincing Cingular the phone is a lemon.  I'd suggest you just try to convince them you want to exchange it for a different phone because you have had bad luck and leave it at that.

I've dropped mine twice (and I dropped it good) recieved a minor dent on battery cover and also loosened the inside trim piece used for locking it down.  a little super glue and it's all good.  I think it gives the phone character now...

On a side note I called Cingular when I had a problem with the battery cover staying locked.  They were very helpful, put me in contacted with HTC who sent a replacement cover.  Although the replacement looks and feels like plastic so after I decide to continue using the original aluminum one, once I super glued it...

Trust me after the two drops I had - this phone is tough.....

I still am finding my 3125 extremely sturdy.  Oh BTW at the airport yesterday I saw the LCD of a new BB Pearl simply pop out of the phone.  It was not even dropped.  Just placed on a coffee table and then it slip against the lip.  LCD just popped out.  It still worked hanging out of the phone, but could not be popped back in.  Phone was only a few weeks old.  I'll write that off to just bad luck.

My 3125 developed internal cracks in the external LDC screen almost immediately after purchase. Reported it to Cingular within 30 days. Cingular's response  -- it is your fault  -- you send the phone to be repaired at your cost. The phone was never dropped. Cingular's only explanation as to how the cracks might have developed is some form of external pressure.  I think the 3125 is a defective product or Cingular should include a warning about the problem.  Would not recommend the phone to anyone who wants a phone that is portable. Best protection for the LDC screen is to leave it at home.

Same thing just happened to me, the external screen is cracked. The Cingular warranty considers it "physical damage" and will not replace it unless I pay for it. I can't find a replacement screen anywhere, and when I do find one, I'll either replace it myself or take it a repair shop. I did bump into it a few times while it was in my pocket and it took some beatings. But it took it last squish and the screen cracked. I hope I can find a replacement screen soon. Good luck to you.
