Disgraced stem cell scientist Hwang Woo-suk said on Wednesday he had attempted to clone now extinct mammoths and Korean tigers.

Once celebrated as a national hero, Hwang was indicted in May on charges of fraud and embezzlement after prosecutors said he masterminded a scheme to fabricate research results for cloning human embryos.

At a trial by a Seoul court, Hwang said he spent part of 500-million won in private donations for his research to attempt to clone Russian mammoths and Korean tigers.

However, he did not elaborate on when he made the attempts and why he failed.
