new recording for free download
I Lost My Life
This is the first recording I've done on my new computer system. Last winter, I released the first two CDs (CD-R or download format) in my Anthology series, which collects some of the better stuff I've written over the years. I'm going in chronological order with that series; Volume 1 covers the "early years" of 1980-1983; Volume 2 is "the best of 1984." (They're available at pactummusic.com.) Unsurprisingly, then, "I Lost My Life" is from 1985, and will likely be part of the Volume 3 collection.

argh!
So I bought two 22" Acer monitors on August 27 from Costco. Only $269 each; the price seemed right.
Well, I finally set up my new computer on Saturday night. Both monitors apparently worked fine.
Not for long. When I got home today, one of them was showing a white screen with a pink vertical stripe in the center. Juggling cables and playing with Windows XP's display properties accomplished nothing. In fact, when I plugged it into my office computer, I got absolutely nothing - not even the power light.
So I went to Acer's automated service center online. I have to pay shipping?? For something I got less than two days use out of? Something's not right here....
Sigh....

so, from 0-40 down in the first game of the third set,
... Roger Federer won 35 consecutive points on his own serve. The next time he lost a point (one) on his own serve, he was up 30-0 while serving for the match (end of the fourth set).
Very creditable effort for Feliciano Lopez, but he couldn't sustain the incredible start he had (won first set 6-3). Once Federer started to read his lefty serve, it was pretty much all over.

if any readers like Joe Satriani
...you really need to check out D. C. Slater. Yeah, you could say it's a bit TOO much like Satch, and therefore derivative, but it's really good guitar work and well-produced.

angels of the seven churches
In support of the notion that each church (or perhaps city?) is to be led by one single pastor or bishop, rather than by a plurality of elders, some of whom may preach, the angels of the seven churches in Revelation are often put forward. Each church/city was represented by one "angel" who was addressed, rather than a leadership group. Since "angel" (Greek aggelos) means "messenger," it is suggested that these are the pastors or bishops of the churches.
Quite aside from the fact that I don't think that aggelos in Scripture usually refers to human beings, I've long maintained that if "angels" in Revelation 2-3 refer to pastors/bishops, the same must be the case throughout the book, and I don't believe that will hold.
In my recent reading of Revelation 12, I was struck by just how forceful this argument becomes when considering the evidence of that chapter.

David Bentley Hart quotes
Well, it's been a very long time coming, but I'm finally done reading David Bentley Hart's The Beauty of the Infinite.
As I think I've said here before, the book is unfortunately dense and arcane. But I suppose one can almost forgive prolixity if you run across occasional profundity, and I think that's the case here. So here are a couple of nice quotations from near the end of the book.

new at paedocommunion.com
Matt Colvin has been kind enough to tidy up his work on "self-examination" (Greek dokimazo) and permit me to give it a permanent home at paedocommunion.com. If you haven't already read this material on his blog, be sure to check out this article; it's a fine rebuttal of the assumption that "self-examination" in 1 Cor 11.28 is something introspective, based on how it is used in 2 Cor 13.5.

in case you haven't been following...
... do by all means check out Peter Leithart's blog. His posts since the 2007 PCA General Assembly (which endorsed the awful "report" on the Federal Vision) have been absolutely devastating. Not harsh, not haranguing - but devastating.
I could list them all, but don't miss this post on temporary benefits.

insofar as a dissertation can be "fascinating"
this looks fascinating.
I'll have to be sure to find time to read it. It's an area I'd like to meditate upon more.

generational hubris
Here's a great quote from Rich Bledsoe:
While we may have some complaints about the Stoicism of our parents' and grandparents' generation, they were not whiners and they expected life to be tough. We are comparatively spoiled brats who are sure that a bruise is worse than death because we are we. After all, all our parents and grandparents achieved was to live through the Great Depression, defeat the Nazis and Fascists, come home to build the greatest economy in the history of the world, and then defeat Communism. We went to Woodstock, destroyed our universities, and learned to play video games. And it's pretty clear which of those is the greater achievement, and we are damn proud of it.

it's been way too long...
... since I read my friend Matt's blog. He writes about the banal happenings of life in such a witty way that one laughs out loud.
Here is a wonderful account of his adventures in household plumbing.
