New Party President Yasuo Fukuda




Following the resignation of President Shinzo Abe, the Party held an election to choose the 22nd President at Party Headquarters on September 23. Eligible voters totaled 528: 304 members of the House of Representatives, 83 members of the House of Councillors, and 141 representatives from 47 prefectural federations of the Party branches.
@@@Candidate Yasuo Fukuda, former Chief Cabinet Secretary, obtained 330 votes and therefore was elected as new Party President. This was approved at the Joint Plenary Meeting of Party Members of Both Houses of the Diet when candidate Fukuda was confirmed as new Party President.

Personal Data of Fukuda, Yasuo
Elected from Gunma prefecture 4th electoral district, (6th term member of the House of Representatives)

Born on July 16, 1936, he graduated from the Faculty of Politics and Economics, Waseda University and worked for an oil company. He was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1990 and has served six terms. Mr. Fukuda has served in the positions of Chief Cabinet Secretary, Minister of State for Gender Equality, and Minister of State and Director-General, Okinawa Development Agency. He also served as a member of the General Council, Deputy Chairman of the Policy Research Council, and Director-General of the Treasury Bureau in the Party. His father is former Prime Minister Takeo Fukuda.
