Awards and accomplishments of our students, our staff, our schools, and our district: Excellence in Academics, Athletics and the Arts

For Excellence in Academics…

East Brunswick is the only district in the state with eight schools designated as Blue Ribbon Schools/National Schools of Excellence by the United States Department of Education. The schools are: Bowne-Munro, Chittick, Irwin, Lawrence Brook, and Warnsdorfer Elementary Schools, Hammarskjold Middle School, Churchill Junior High School, and East Brunswick High School.

An EBHS senior received a 2006 National Council of Teacher’s of English Achievement Award in Writing.

An HMS sixth grader was one of 12 winners in the Fifth Annual Recycling Poetry Contest sponsored by the Association of New Jersey Recyclers.

A Chittick School fifth grader was one of 12 winners nationwide in the Kids for King National Essay Program sponsored by the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial Project Foundation, Inc.

EBHS students performed admirably in the 2006 Advanced Placement Testing Program.

Sixty-four EBHS seniors were named Edward J. Bloustein Distinguished Scholars.

Fourteen EBHS seniors were finalists in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship Competition.

Ninety-four EBHS juniors and seniors were inducted into the National Honor Society.

An EBHS senior was designated The Star Ledger Mort Pye Scholar for the State of New Jersey for 2007.

EBHS Mathletes were commended for having the highest scores in the nation on two problems in the 2007 Collaborative Problem-Solving Contest, a national mathematics contest administered by National Assessment & Testing.

Two HMS sixth grade students placed first and second in the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife’s Art and Writing contest.

A CJHS student was a winner in the Luna Kaufman Writing Contest sponsored by the Center for Holocaust Studies at Brookdale Community College.

Three members of the EBHS Family Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) club received a gold medal in the Project Earth category at the Statewide FCCLA Competition.

Eight EBHS juniors were selected to attend the prestigious Governor’s School of New Jersey, a unique summer residential program for artistically and academically talented students: Governor’s School of the Arts (1), Governor’s School on the Environment (1), Governor’s School of International Studies (3), Governor’s School of Public Issues (1) and Governor’s School in the Sciences (2).

Five CJHS students were finalists in the Region-at-Large Program of the Scholastic Writing Awards of 2007 sponsored by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

A group of five students on the EBHS Second-year Advanced Placement Chemistry Team placed First in the State in Chemistry in the New Jersey Science League.

The DNA research of three EBHS students has been published on the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) database that disseminates biomedical information for the better understanding of molecular processes affecting human health and disease. The students participated in the Waksman Scholars Program at Rutgers University.

Latin students from EBHS and CJHS received recognition for their scores on the National Latin Exam: Gold Medal/Summa Cum Laude (5), Silver Medal/Maxima Cum Laude (5), Magna Cum Laude (4) and Cum Laude (7).

Forty-four HMS students that took the SAT or ACT were recognized for their exemplary scores by the Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth. Twenty-two seventh graders and one sixth grader scored well on both the reading and math sections and Nineteen seventh graders and two sixth graders scored well in one of the two subject areas.

Nineteen EBHS students received recognition for their exemplary performance at the Rutgers Model United Nations.

Fourteen EBHS students and five CJHS students received recognition for their exemplary performance at the Rutgers Model Congress.

Six EBHS students were recognized for their exceptional performance at the Harvard Model United Nations.

Sixty-seven EBHS students were recognized for performing admirably at the National High School Model United Nations.

Twenty-four EBHS students enrolled in the Advanced Placement Institute for Political and Legal Education (IPLE) class placed in the top ten in the National We the People: the Citizen and the Constitution competition. This is the nineteenth time out of a possible 20 that EBHS students have represented the State of New Jersey in this national competition.

Twenty CJHS students were recognized for their exemplary performance at the Middle School We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution at Rutgers University.

A member of the Class of 2007 was a member of a four member team from the United States to receive the highest combined score and a gold medal at the International Biology Olympiad at the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon, Canada.

The EBHS Science Bowl Team won the Regional Science Bowl competition for the fifth year in a row earning the honor of representing the region at the National Science Bowl sponsored by the Department of Energy where they went on to place in the top twelve out of 64 teams.

EBHS students (10) finished first in the State in the integrated science component at the 57th Annual Merck State Science Day. Additionally, fifteen students contributed to the high school’s overall first-place cumulative total.

The sixth and seventh grade HMS Academic Challengers were recognized for their outstanding performance. The sixth grade team (6 students) was awarded first place and the seventh grade team (6 students) placed second in their respective competitions.

A Chittick student placed first in the Expo Classroom Makeover Essay Contest. His teacher, received an Expo Mimio Interactive Whiteboard valued at $5,000.

The articles written by nine Chittick fourth grade students were among 300 selected to be part of the 2007 Student On-line Newspaper on the Celebrate NJ website. Read what they had to say about what makes the Garden State a place to celebrate at www.celebratenj.org/sp_student.html

Thirty writers in grades 4 through 11 submitted writings using a print from the Zimmerli Art Museum’s collection as a writing prompt. Ten students were invited to read their narratives at a reception at the Zimmerli.

A Frost fourth grade student was the district winner of the What My State Means to Me Essay Contest sponsored by Senator Barbara Buono.

Twenty-two adult students became American Citizens due in part to instruction they received through Community Programs Adult Basic Skills course, ESL with a Civics Focus.

For the 29th consecutive year the district received $250,350 from the New Jersey Department of Developmental Disabilities to provide Adult Life Skills instruction to developmentally disabled adults.

Excellence in Athletics…

The EBHS athletic teams won the Red Division Sportsmanship Award for the 2006-07 athletic year, proving that whether they win or lose a game, our athletes are winners when it comes to their character.

Fall Accomplishments…

  • Girls Junior Varsity Soccer - tournament champions

  • Ninth Grade Girls Soccer - tournament champions

  • Girls Junior Varsity Field Hockey - tournament champions

  • Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball - tournament champions

  • Girls Varsity Volleyball - GMC tournament and Red Division champions

  • Girls Varsity Soccer - Division and GMC tournament champions

  • Girls Varsity Cross Country – Red Division Champions

  • Girls Varsity Tennis - Division, GMC, Central Jersey and Group IV Champions as well as 2nd in the Tournament of Champions

  • Five EBHS varsity cheerleaders were recognized by the National Cheerleading Association to be All American Cheerleaders.

  • Sixty students participated in the second annual Fifth Grade Ben Embly Fun Run sponsored by the elementary physical education teachers. The male and female winners were from Chittick and Lawrence Brook respectively. All were winners in the quest for fitness and wellness!

  • Warnsdorfer School received a plaque from the Raritan Valley Road Racers for having the most participants in the East Brunswick Road Races One Mile Fun Run.

Winter Accomplishments…

  • The Varsity Boys Basketball team won the Red Division Sportsmanship Award.

  • Twelve varsity athletes were recognized as All Division in their individual sports during the winter season: Basketball (2), Bowling (3), Swimming (6) and Wrestling (1).

  • A Varsity wrestler, ranked #8 in the State.

Spring Accomplishments…

  • The Varsity Boys Volleyball Team was the NJSIAA State Champion and the Number One ranked team in the State. The team also earned the following titles: South-Central Sectional Champion, GMC Tournament Champion and Red Division Champion.

  • The Boys Tennis team was the Red Division Champion and the GMC Tournament Champion.

  • The Boys Golf team was the Division Champion and the GMC Tournament Champion.

  • The following varsity athletes were recognized as All Division in their individual sports during the spring season: Lacrosse (2), Softball (2), Spring Track (4), Boy’s Tennis (6), Golf (3) and Boys Volleyball (4).

  • One varsity Volleyball Team member was designated the Star Ledger State Player of the Year in Volleyball.

  • One varsity Volleyball Team member was designated the Home News Tribune Area Player of the Year in Volleyball.

  • Two varsity Volleyball Team members were recognized as All State by the Star Ledger in Volleyball.

  • Two EBHS athletes were selected by the coaches to receive the GMC Sportsmanship Award, now the Dan Hayston Memorial Sportsmanship Award.

  • Two EBHS athletes were selected to receive the GMC Scholar Athlete Award.

Excellence in the Arts…

Two Bowne-Munro students were winners in the 2007 Housing for All Poster Calendar Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Association of Realtors.

An EBHS sophomore and sousaphone player was one of four students from New Jersey selected to play in the Macy’s Great American Marching Band on Thanksgiving Day.

Three members (EBHS seniors) of the EBHS Marching Band Color Guard were chosen to march in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.

An EBHS junior, a violinist was accepted into the 2007 All-Eastern Orchestra.

A Warnsdorfer third grade student was a statewide winner in the 2008 Calendar Poster Contest sponsored by the New Jersey Task Force on Child Abuse and Neglect and the New Jersey PTA.

One HMS sixth grade student and one EBHS sophomore were grand prize winners in their individual age categories in Geico’s 2006 Safety Belt Poster Contest.

An EBHS sophomore was the grand prize winner in this year’s Congressional Art Competition for New Jersey’s Twelfth District.

Artwork done by two EBHS Advanced Placement Art Studio students was selected for the Art Administrators of NJ Emerging Artists competition.

A Central fifth grader was the New Jersey winner of the 2007 Arbor Day National Poster Contest.

A Bowne-Munro fifth grade student was one of twelve winners from throughout New Jersey in the 2007 Partnership for a Drug Free New Jersey Poster Contest.

A Bowne-Munro fourth grade student placed second in the New Jersey Poison Information and Education System’s 2007 Poison Prevention Poster Contest.

A Warnsdorfer third grade student was a winner in Middlesex Water Company’s Water-Always Floating Through My Day Contest.

Two CJHS students were recognized for Excellence in the Arts at the Middlesex County Teen Arts Festival. One student’s work was chosen to be part of the Statewide Touring Art Show.

One Frost fifth grade student was a grand prize winner in Panera Bakery Restaurants Art-Good Enough to Eat competition.

One EBHS student was selected to perform in the 2007 New Jersey All-State Band.

One EBHS student was accepted into both the 2007 New Jersey All-State Wind Ensemble and the 2007 New Jersey All-State Orchestra.

Five EBHS students were accepted into the Senior Region Band.

One CJHS student was accepted into the Senior Region Chorus.

Five CJHS students were accepted into the Intermediate Region Band.

Two CJHS students were accepted into the Senior Region Orchestra.

One CJHS student was accepted into both the Senior Region Orchestra and the 2007 New Jersey All-State Orchestra. This student was also chosen to be the Concert Master in the Intermediate Region Orchestra for the second year in a row.

Nine CJHS students were accepted into the Intermediate Region Orchestra.

Four CJHS students were accepted into the Intermediate All-State Orchestra.

Two HMS students were accepted into the Intermediate Region Chorus.

Nine HMS students were accepted into the Intermediate Region Orchestra or the Intermediate Region String Orchestra.

Two HMS students were accepted into the Intermediate Region Orchestra or the Intermediate Region Band.

Eighteen fifth grade students representing all eight elementary schools were chosen to perform in the Central New Jersey Honors Band with students from throughout Central Jersey: Bowne-Munro (4), Chittick (2), Lawrence Brook (2), Warnsdorfer (3), Memorial (3), Frost (1), Central (2) and Irwin (1).

The EBHS Orchestra received a Superior Rating at the North American Music Festival held in New York City.

The EBHS Concert Choir received a Superior Rating at the Heritage Music Festival held in Boston.

At Festival Disney in Orlando, Florida the EBHS Marching Band received a Superior Rating in their category and a Silver Rating overall in the marching band category.
